River Country Campground

Much of this lush forest was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, and some of the structures and work remain. It also includes Sipsey Wilderness, which is the largest national forest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River. Recreational opportunities in the forest include hiking and biking, hunting and fishing, off-roading, horseback riding, bird watching, and nature and wildlife viewing. Maps and passes can be obtained at any of the Forest Service District Offices and maps and guides can be downloaded. The forest is home to the Cheaha Wilderness with its peaks, valleys, rock bluffs, trees, wildflowers, and wildlife. Ranger district offices throughout the forest offer information, maps, guides, passes, and permits. Hiking trails include the Chinnabee Silent Trail, the Lake Shore Trail, the Cave Creek Trail, the Nubbin Creek Trail, the Odum Scout Trail, the Pinhoti Trail, and the Skyway Loop Trail. There are also bike trails and ATV trails. Hunting is allowed, and the forest is full of wild game. Maps, guides, and other information can be found online, in an app, from the USDA Forest Service, or from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
