Big Lake Wildlife Management Area is owned and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department despite its presence in the state of Arkansas. It can be accessed from two separate locations by county roads; roughly three-quarters of the area is open to public recreation, and the area is interrupted in places by sects of privately owned land. The terrain consists of poorly drained clay soils and bottomland mature hardwood timber habitat; native wildlife includes white-tailed deer, feral hogs, and armadillos, just to name a few, making it a great destination for nature viewing and photography. Several hundreds of plant species have been identified within the management area. Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1961 and consists of a lake surrounded by old-growth bald cypress forest. The forest remains flooded year-round creating a high-quality habitat for wintering waterfowl and breeding forest birds. Neotropical songbirds can also be observed here as they migrate to and from Central and South America, and the park is an island of undisturbed nature surrounded by agriculture. The refuge has a visitor center with exhibits and staff who offer educational programs and are happy to answer questions. Visitors can enjoy photography and wildlife viewing; fishing and hunting are allowed with permits. Singer Forest Natural Heritage Area is a bottomland forest and overflow swamp that represents the forested wetlands that were once common but have been almost completely erased by agriculture. Tree stands in the area have little to no undergrowth, making hiking the area possible without established trails (although a compass and some experience are suggested). Hunting is allowed.
