Dunnigan, a small, country town with all the basic amenities, is located a little north of San Francisco, in Yolo County. The town sits at the base of a steep hill, in a wide and flat valley. With the proximity of Interstate 5, the town is easily accessible. Nearby there are numerous attractions to explore such as Napa Valley, Lake Berryessa and the City of Sacramento. Originally the town was called Antelope when it was established around 1853 but changed when a Yolo County postal worker came to town and gave his name to it. Today it is still a sleepy little North California town that makes a great base for starting an exploring adventure.

The Great Outdoors

When you book an RV in Dunnigan, you will have access to several unique recreational locales, including Putah Creek and Putah Creek State Wildlife Area, that covers over 670 acres. It’s a beautiful area, with a landscape from gentle rolling slopes to steep hills and is perfect for hiking. Native wildlife includes, California towhee and Bullock’s oriole. Remember this is a wildlife area, marked trails or facilities are limited.

Lake Berryessa is just a short drive from Putah Creek Wildlife Area and is the largest lake in the Napa Valley area. It was created when Monticello Dam was constructed in 1958. The lake provides water for the local area plus a range of recreational activities, such as fishing, water-sports and bird watching. There is a seaplane base operating from the lake for those that are adventurous.

A Dunnigan motorhome rental will have you about one-hour away from Wilbur Hot Springs. The naturally occurring hot springs were used by Native Americans in the area and local folklore talks of curing medical conditions by bathing in the water. Wilbur Hot Sulphur Springs opened to the public in 1865 and offers hotel accommodation and those curing waters.

Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Park located thirty minutes north of Dunnigan offers picnic sites and a small boat launch ramp. For the avid fisherman, this is an excellent opportunity to cast your line and fish for salmon, trout and bass. The park also attracts a vast range of migratory birds. Camping is available at the site for motorhomes up to 27 feet long.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV in Dunnigan, you will need somewhere to park it for the night. The Dunnigan area caters to out-of-town visitors. Both vacationers, as well as locals are welcome.

Campers Inn RV Park is just 2 miles north of the town and offers a simple, peaceful location for you to park your Dunnigan camper rental. On-site, you’ll find a convenience store, full hookup and shower facilities. Should your four-legged friend with you, they will appreciate the dog exercise area. No matter what size your RV, the park can accommodate it. Pull-thru sites for easy access are also available.

Happy Time RV Park, located south of Dunnigan, is another option. This relatively small site has all the amenities you need for RV parking, including full hook-ups and pull-thru sites. During the summer season, a swimming pool is available to help keep you cool from the California heat.

Near the town of Nicolaus in Sacramento Valley you will find Lake Minden RV Resort. This site offers a full range of facilities, including a clubhouse, restaurant and free WIFI. The mini Golf course, playground and various sports facilities will keep the kids occupied for hours. Some sites are full hook-up while others only offer electric hook-up. The lake provides fishing on your doorstep, with an abundance of catfish and bass.

Should you need a quick overnight stay, you could consider Walmart, truck stops, or larger grocery stores. There are several Walmarts located within 20 miles of town and camping may be allowed at these locations, just check with the manager to get permission. There are also gas stations with truck stops that provide showers within five minutes of town.

Exploring the City

There's a multitude of attractions located near Dunnigan that provide a variety of fun for people of all ages. The Full Belly Farm, a certified organic farm located in Capay Valley offers educational tours, as well as a farm shop where you may purchase items such as, baked goods, grains and nuts, oils, and other gifts.

The small town of Capay, showcases sustainable farming and other environmental options. Weekly farmers' markets provide a multitude of fresh food choices. A Tomato Festival is held each July and offers fresh organic tomatoes, live bands, great food, and wine. This is an excellent event for all ages.

The Yolo County Historical Museum in Woodland is a great place to park your Dunnigan travel trailer rental. The museum has been open since the 1990's and features the only historic home in Yolo County open to the public, "Gibson House."

While in Woodland, there are several places to visit, but stop in at Reiff’s Antique Gas Station Automotive Museum for a trip back in car culture. With memorabilia from the 1950s, this museum is a blast from the past that will surely bring back memories.
