Discover Huntington Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips

Huntington Lake is a mountain reservoir lying at two thousand feet, deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Named after Henry Edwards Huntington, this man-made reservoir was constructed in 1912 as part of the "Big Creek Hydroelectric Project," designed to bring more power to the ever-developing California. Although Huntington Lake is located within the mountains, those with an RV rental can easily access it via state route 168, which passes along its northern shores. Driving down from the mountains, visitors are only a short distance from the towns of North Fork and Tollhouse.

Getting Outdoors

Huntington Lake is the dream location for any angler, whether they are expert fishermen or beginners. This high mountain lake contains kokanee salmon, brown trout, and rainbow trout, both of which can be caught along the northern shore with the fly-fishing method. One for the early risers, the best time to catch these fish is before ten o’clock in the morning. If you prefer fishing from the shoreline, spots such as Billy Creek and the inlet at Home Camp Creek are fertile areas for catching lots of fish. Huntington Lake campers should be aware that sate fishing regulations apply, and anglers are only allowed five fish per day and ten in possession.

Camping At Huntington Lake

Rancheria Campground is located on the east side of Huntington Lake and one of the best campgrounds for motorhome camping near the lake. With 125 sites, Rancheria is one of the largest campgrounds in the area. Many of the sites accommodate RV’s and trailers but only up to forty feet. Each site has a picnic table, campfire ring, and grill. Drinking water, vault toilets, and restrooms are also provided. This unique campground also has its own onsite amphitheater, used to host campfire programs on summer weekends.

Exploring The Area

Only a short drive from the shores of Huntington Lake is the small town of North Fork, home to the Sierra Mono Museum. This museum is a rare gem in terms of the preservation of Native American history and culture in the Sierra Nevada region. This museum is the first to be solely owned and operated by the Mono people, the tribe who traditionally live in this area of the United States. Over the decades the museum has gained a strong reputation for its wide variety of genuine artifacts. These included the highly prized Native American woven baskets. For a small entrance fee, you too can view these historical artifacts and learn about a way of life that is sadly coming to an end.
