Make your way to the stunning Mono Lake for a motorhome camping trip and be amazed by its natural beauty. The state of California is home to what happens to be one of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere. Located very close to the town of Lee Vining, just off Highway 395, the lake is a mere 13 miles from Yosemite National Park. Mono Lake is known for its scenic views with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains creating a great reflection on the shimmering blue waters. The lake is also popular for the dramatic Tufa Towers, columns of limestone rock rising above the surface of the water. With the lake very close to the cities of Mammoth Lakes and Coleville, book an RV in Mono County for the best way to explore the nearby cities and their attractions.

Mono Lake is nestled at the edge of the arid Great Basin and covers seventy square miles of a unique ecosystem, owing to its high salt levels that make the lake water alkaline in nature, and the perfect breeding ground for brine shrimp; the shrimp, in turn, contribute to an important habitat for over two million migratory birds, making it one of the best spots for bird watching. Renting an RV near Mono Lake is one of the best ways to explore the lake’s surrounding areas and the recreational activities on offer at this historic lake.

Discover Mono Lake

Getting Outdoors

There is so much to do here, and a Mono Lake camper rental will serve you well on your adventures through the area. Begin your visit at the Mono Lake Visitor Center, located off Highway 395. This is a great starting point to understand the area’s human and natural history through the exhibits on display. If you need guidance with planning your visit through the area, the staff is always ready to help.

If you enjoy boating, you’ll have the experience of a lifetime boating in Mono Lake. While all kinds of boating are permitted, you have to be careful to keep a safe distance from the Osprey nesting sites near the Tufa Towers and other islands. Canoes and kayaks can be launched from Navy Beach on the south shore of the lake. If you have a big boat, then use the launching ramp near Lee Vining Creek. Be careful about sudden gusts of high winds that are frequent in the area when you’re out boating.

If you’re the kind who likes to understand the geology of an area, then a canoe tour is highly recommended. Guided canoe tours provide an in-depth understanding of the ecology and geology of this desert lake.

Taking a dip in Mono Lake is another memorable experience to add to your list. Since the lake’s salty water is denser than regular ocean water, you’ll have quite a buoyant swim in the lake which is also believed to have plenty of medicinal qualities.

If you settle on camping with an RV in the Mono Lake area in the fall season, you’ll be in luck to witness hundreds and thousands of migratory birds descend on the lake. Since the lake is on the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory route, it makes an ideal stop for birds nesting and feeding.
