Monrovia is a city in Los Angeles County, California, which distinguishes itself from its neighbors through its small-town atmosphere and resident high-tech industry. Monrovia is recognized for its first-class education and health care. It also has cultural and recreational facilities that attract visitors from near and far. It began in 1886 when the first lots were sold. Prior to that, it had been a loose collection of randomly scattered houses and dirt roads. The city was named after William Monroe, one of the founders and the president of the Monrovia Land and Water Company. The company sold lots cheaply on the condition that owners complete building of houses on their lots within six months of purchase. This scared away land speculators and allowed Monrovia to avoid the collapse of the land boom that other cities experienced later on.
