Getting Outdoors

Boasting crystal clear waters surrounded by spectacular peaks, it is no surprise that RV camping at Whiskeytown Lake is popular with boaters. Although personal watercraft are not permitted on the lake, those with their own boat in tow can still spend a tranquil day on the waters using the boat launch areas at Oak Bottom and Brandy Creek. The Oak Bottom Marina can be found on the northern shores of Whiskeytown Lake and hires out kayaks and motorboats for those without their own.

Any avid anglers camping with an RV at Whiskeytown Lake can also stock up on tackle at the Oak Bottom Marina. Considered to be one of California’s best Kokanee Salmon fisheries, the park imposes a strict five-fish limit per person here. Home to two different strains of Kokanee Salmon, spawning seasons happens both at the end of September and November, heightening your chances for a juicy catch. Any other time of year, fishers can also expect to catch rainbow trout and largemouth bass.

For those that aren’t too keen on water sports, hike to one of the four waterfalls situated not too far from the water’s edge. Standing at 220-feet high, Whiskeytown Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls to hike to and arguably the most accessible. For a more challenging hike, head to the Brandy Creek Falls that cascades over five large granite steps creating a truly spectacular sight. The falls are best viewed during spring when the snow waters, are melting and the waterfalls are at their most active!

Camping at Whiskeytown Lake

Camping at Whiskeytown Lake is made even easier thanks to the two campgrounds located on the shoreline that are suitable for those with an RV rental. Located right at the marina, Oak Bottom Campground is ideal for those hoping to spend as much time on the water as possible. Although there are no hookup facilities provided, campers can use the central washrooms, on-site dump station, and drinking water facilities for no extra fee.

Those who prefer a more primitive motorhome camping experience should head to Brandy Creek RV Campground that can be found on the south-western shores of the lake. Recommended for self-contained units only, this campground provides no hookup or restroom facilities. There is, however, drinking water available and a dump station on site.

Exploring the Area

Camping in an RV at Whiskeytown Lake is not just about spending time in the great outdoors, but also learning about the area’s rich history. History buffs with an RV rental near Whiskeytown Lake should visit the Tower House Historic District on the western side of the lake, which is home to two sites that played a significant role during the Gold Rush Era.

The El Dorado Mine Ruins are the first of the two sites to explore. The well-preserved ruins left here today give visitors the chance to explore a true Californian mine as it once was. Make sure to check out the stamp mill building, and blacksmith shed complete with several ore carts, all of which are unmoved since the day the mine ceased operation.

Another of the sites is the Charles Camden House which was built at the beginning of the Gold Rush in 1852. The house is accessible via a paved trail that begins in the parking lot of the Tower House Historic District. This well-preserved piece of history gives visitors a glimpse into life as it once was in this area. During the summer, the rangers organize guided walks complete with an informative commentary about the house and its occupants.

If you still haven’t had your fill of history, head into Redding to visit the Eaten House Museum. Once the residential home of John Scott and his family, this Victorian-style house now houses rotating exhibitions that preserve and celebrate the regions vibrant past. Call ahead to organize a guided tour of the property run by one of the knowledgeable staff.
