Between Anaheim and Los Angeles sits the town of Whittier, California. It is part of a series of cities that make up what is commonly referred to as the ‘Gateway Cities’. It was first incorporated in 1898 and became a city officially in 1955. Once the first railroad was established through Whittier in 1887, the city began to blossom and bloom. There are numerous colleges in and around the area and being close to a major fault line, earthquakes can be felt from time to time. The city’s historic buildings were significantly damaged on October 1, 1987 by a 5.9 earthquake, followed three days later by a major aftershock that measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.
