The exciting little town of Welland sits just a short distance to the south of St. Catharine’s and southwest of Niagara Falls in Ontario. Historically, it’s held a place of importance as a transportation hub between the Great Lakes and the cities of Buffalo and Toronto, giving it the motto “where rails and water meet.” In more recent years, its central location has helped it to develop as a tourist destination. When you book an RV in Welland, you can avoid the high priced accommodations of the Niagara Falls area while still being close enough to enjoy this wonder of nature.

There are a number of festivals worth checking when you get a travel trailer rental in Welland. The most well known is the Niagara Regional Exposition, which has been going since the mid-19th century and showcases the best agricultural products from the region. FloatFest, which happens every July, fills the nearby canal with inflatables (inner tubes, inflatable kayaks, and loads of pool toys) to celebrate the summer season and in 2017, it even made the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest line of inflatables at 540 feet. There’s also the Zombie Walk held every October when residents dress as their favorite versions of the living dead to roam the streets.

Discover Welland

The Great Outdoors

A visit to Niagara Falls is probably going to be on your itinerary when you get a motorhome rental in Welland. There’s no doubt that the Canadian side of the falls is the touristy one, the area adjacent to them is packed with hotels, casinos, and shopping and the nearby Horseshoe Falls viewing area is the quintessential place to take a selfie when visiting Niagara Falls. For a more peaceful experience though, head across the border to New York, which doesn’t have as spectacular of views but sees fewer tourists and you can book a boat ride to the base of the falls for an up-close experience.

There’s also no shortage of great bike paths in town as the Welland Canal cuts right through the middle and is flanked by the Welland Canals Parkway Trail. The path runs from St. Catharines on Lake Ontario to Port Colborne on Lake Erie and is a great spot to watch massive cargo ships transiting the Great Lakes.

For a quiet stroll or picnic with the family, make a visit to Merritt Island Park in the middle of the Welland Canal. There’s not too much to do there besides enjoy the colorful rose gardens and wander the paths, but you can’t beat the location in the center of the city.

RV Parks

Thanks to its proximity to Niagara Falls and all the tourist attractions associated with it, there are quite a few parks to stay in when you rent an RV in Welland. One of the closest to town is Bissell’s Hideaway Resort in Ridgeville. Not only does it have all the basics like full hookups, laundry facilities, and showers, but there’s a full-scale waterpark, mini golf, and pedal boats to keep the whole family entertained; this RV park could be an attraction on its own.

If you’re hoping to stay close to the falls, you should consider the Niagara Falls KOA. It’s heavy on the amenities like full hookups for your Welland RV rental, a swimming pool, its own pub, pancake breakfasts, and movies on the lawn. The park is right off the main highway and just minutes from the falls too.

To get away from all the hubbub of the falls, one only needs to head a little to the south of Welland, where tranquility can be found on the shores of Lake Erie. Sherkston Shores RV Resort is just outside of Port Colborne and is home to some beautiful beaches. If you’re looking for relaxing accommodations in Welland, this would be a good spot to consider.

Exploring the City

One of the top historical sights in the Welland area is the Morningstar Mill, a beautifully persevered mill and waterwheel on the Decew Falls. It’s now run as an industrial heritage museum and is open for tours. It’s the perfect spot to get some picturesque shots of rural Ontario life.

If you get a camper rental in Welland during near the end of the summer season, you absolutely must pick your own produce at one of the nearby farms. Berries and cherries are the mainstays, but if you do some searching, you can find all sorts of fruits and vegetables available. Don’t have time to pick? There are plenty of farm stands along the roads where everything has already been packaged up, ready for your kitchen.

The area of Canada between the Great Lakes also has one of the best climates in the country for growing wine grapes, so a vineyard should definitely be on your itinerary if you enjoy a glass of vino. Each will have tastings where you can try some blends that probably taste quite different from what you’re used to picking up at the supermarket. Many also have tours of their fields where you can see how the grapes are grown and the process that turns them into your favorite wines.
