Encompassing 510 acres on the southern shoreline of Lake Ontario, Golden Hill State Park is highly recommended by RV campers, hunters, fishers, and history enthusiasts. The park is known for its trails that meander across the grass prairies, along the coast, and through oak groves. Other centerpiece attractions include Lake Ontario itself and the 60-foot-tall lighthouse, built back in 1875 and boasting scenic views from the top of the tower.

Aside from the amazing recreation opportunities available at Lake Ontario, it's also a place where lots of migratory bird species come to roost. Depending on the season, birdwatchers can expect to see grebes, swans, geese, loons, and ducks, as well as birds of prey like eagles and hawks.

Guests who want to spend their time motorhome camping at the state park can find an RV rental in one of the nearby towns like Medina, Middleport, and Albion. Alternatively, you can just search for an RV in Niagara County. The park's proximity to Niagara Falls is another reason why it's so popular among RV campers.

Getting Outdoors

Anyone camping in an RV at Golden Hill State Park for the first time should definitely check out the lighthouse, as it's one of the park’s most iconic attractions. You can sign up for a guided tour and learn about the historical significance of the lighthouse. Make sure you take your camera too, as the view from the top is simply astonishing. As part of the tour, you get to see the room from which the lighthouse was operated.

If you want to explore the park, you can do so by boat or by venturing onto the hiking trails. The trails can also be used for biking, and you can even go deeper into the forest if you want to go trapping or hunting at Golden Hill State Park. Just make sure to check with the park authorities regarding hunting rules and regulations. If you're exploring the park from your boat, you can also pack your fishing gear and find a nice relaxing spot to catch steelhead trout and salmon.

Make sure you take full advantage of the spacious recreation area and spend some fun time with your family playing disc golf. You'll find the disc golf course near the park’s marina. Just make sure to bring your own equipment. You'll also want to keep your camera handy to capture views of the park from the course.

Camping at Golden Hill State Park

RV campers will be glad to hear that there are over 50 RV campsites at Golden Hill State Park, many of which offer water and electric hookups. The maximum RV length is 40 feet, which is good to keep in mind when choosing a rental motorhome for your trip. You also get access to all the standard camping amenities, like picnic tables, showers, drinking water, fire pits, a dump station, and restrooms.

You're also allowed to bring up to two pets, but remember to bring proof of their rabies vaccination. You can make a reservation in advance, but remember that you'll need to confirm your reservation prior to your arrival.

Exploring the Area

If you need supplies or gas, you'll find a store and gas station a few minutes away from the park. As far as the restaurants go, the nearby town has a few eateries, but cuisine options leave much to be desired. The most diverse selection of cuisine will be in Albion and Medina, where you can savor burgers, pizza, bar-and-grill fare, Chinese, and Mexican food.

While in Medina, check out the Medina Railroad Museum and take a ride on one of the older train models. You'll also get to see what the old train station looked like, as well as train toy models, antiques, and more. This is a real treat for any train enthusiast, and there's no doubt you'll enjoy the slow-paced ride.

If you want to explore Albion, you should take some time to visit the Cobblestone Museum. Here, you'll get to learn more about Western New York culture, art, and history. Artifacts, antiques, and books tell the tale of people who lived in this area during the late 19th century. Expect to see lots of agricultural tools, as farming and trade were the main contributors to the development of this area during that time.

A bit closer to the Golden Hill State Park RV campground, near the town of Lyndonville, is the Robin Hill Preserve. You can stroll through spacious gardens, see rare plant species, and explore the old manor on the estate. This is a golden opportunity to see more of New York's nature and learn something new in the process.
