Elk Creek Campground is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area and offers campers prime access to the lake as well as the nearby walking trails. Each of the 160 sites is equipped with 50, 30, or 20 amp electricity along with water hookups. A dump station can also be found on-site and can be used at no extra charge. In addition to these amenities, the site hosts several modern washrooms that have hot showers and flushing toilets and are ADA-accessible.
Exploring the Area
You won’t need to travel too far from Blue Mesa Reservoir to find a couple of indoor attractions. The Gunnison Pioneer Museum sits in the heart of the town of Gunnison and is just a 20-minute drive or scenic hour-long walk from the lake. Stretching across five acres of land, visitors can explore Gunnison’s first post office, a Denver & Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Train, two schoolhouses, a collection of antique cars, and a log cabin chapel in just one visit. These fascinating artifacts, along with many informative displays, allows all visitors to leave with better knowledge of the founding history of Gunnison town.
