Discover Boyd Lake State Park

Getting Outdoors

For most visitors to Boyd Lake State Park, the main attraction is obviously the lake itself. With 1,700 acres of surface area to explore, this big and beautiful body of water provides opportunities galore for boating enthusiasts.

Whatever type of boat you've got, you're welcome on Boyd Lake. Water skiing (in the southern half of the lake only) and jet skiing are popular in calm conditions, while sailboats take to the water when the breeze picks up.

If you'd prefer to get around under your own steam, you can paddle the lake with a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. A handful of local companies also offer Boyd Lake stand-up paddleboard rentals if you don't have your own craft, so there's no excuse not to take to the water.

Fishing is another popular pastime in the park all year round, both from the shore and from boats. The lake is a haven for largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, bluegill, carp, crappie, and several other species, so don't forget your fishing rods when you're loading up your rental RV.

For those campers who prefer to be in rather than on the water, Boyd Lake State Park also features its own sandy beach. It's a welcome sight in the middle of a hot Colorado summer, and a designated swimming area is set aside to ensure the safety of everyone who takes a dip. Showers, restrooms, a playground, and a snack bar are all nearby, while those who want to swim straight from a boat can do so in the lake's three designated no-wake areas.

Of course, if you ever tire of all these watersports, you can always get stuck into some land-based fun. Highlights include two sand volleyball courts, hiking the park's half-mile nature trail, and riding a bike along the paved trail that runs alongside the water's edge.

Camping at Boyd Lake State Park

If you're keen to camp with an RV in Boyd Lake State Park, rent a motorhome in Larimer County and then reserve yourself a site in the Cottonwood Campground.

Set on a grassy knoll, the campground boasts 148 pull-through sites. Sites can accommodate RVs of up to 40 feet, and all sites feature 20, 30, and 50-amp electric hookups as well as their own picnic table and grill.

Three restroom buildings, each with its own showers, are clean and well-maintained. Laundry facilities are also available. A playground and horseshoe pits are provided to keep campers of all ages entertained.

Select sites in the campground are also open during the winter season, which runs from November 1 to March 31. Finally, pets are welcome in the Boyd Lake State Park campground but must be on a leash of six feet or shorter at all times.

If you steer your rental motorhome north towards Fort Collins, which is just 20 minutes away, you could be exploring the craft beer capital of Colorado in no time. If you're traveling with little ones, stop by the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery for a fun and interactive learning experience.

Of course, if you'd prefer to head for a big city, Denver is just under an hour's drive south. While you're exploring the Mile High City, don't forget to check out the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, one of the best natural history museums anywhere in the country.
