Sweeping vistas of mountain peaks, serene woodlands and wetlands, and emerald-hued ponds teeming with wildlife — this is just the start of what Mueller State Park has to offer. This 5,000-acre expanse nestled in the scenic foothills of Pikes Peak is an outdoor oasis in all seasons.
When you get a glimpse of this tranquil tract, you'll want to park your rental RV and stay awhile to explore it all. Book an RV in Teller County and let the adventures begin!
The best way to kick off your Mueller State Park camping adventure is to explore the park's extensive trail network. Over 40 miles of multi-use pathways are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. For a short, scenic stroll, take Trail 16 to the overlook at the summit of Grouse Mountain. Admire the park from a dizzying 9,800 feet high and snap photos of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains looming in the distance. Be aware that all trails are open to hikers, so if you're planning a mountain biking excursion, watch out for foot traffic.
Water lovers will be a little out of luck here. Boating is prohibited in the park, and there's no lake to explore. Fortunately, the ponds are an excellent spot to do a little wildlife watching, so don't forget to pack your binoculars in the rental RV. Mueller State Park is a habitat for all sorts of critters, from docile mule deer to elusive black bears and mountain lions. Birdwatchers will feel right at home here with the chance to spot everything from hummingbirds and chickadees to red-tailed hawks and American kestrels. You may even spot the park's resident elk herd on your excursions.
The fun doesn't stop when the snow starts falling. The kids will love the four sledding and tubing areas throughout the park. Winter wanderers can also break in their new gear on the cross-country skiing trails. Come prepared for a real challenge, though. While all trails are open to snowshoers and skiers, none of them are groomed. Be sure to check the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website for updates on weather conditions if you're planning an adventure in the snow.
If you're visiting Mueller State Park in the spring or summer, you should have no trouble finding a place to park your motorhome rental. More than 100 sites with electric hookups are spread across four camping areas. You'll enjoy all the comforts of home here, including modern restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Additional amenities include a fire pit, picnic table, and dump station. Both pull-through and back-in sites are available, and the maximum length for RVs is 50 feet. If you're looking for alternative accommodations, reserve one of the park's cabins or yurts.
Do your homework while planning your motorhome camping trip at Mueller State Park — you just might snag a site with a view! Most sites are set in partially shaded, wooded areas. Some sites in the Peak View camping area offer magnificent vistas of Pikes Peak, while select spaces in the Revenuer's Ridge area boast views of the Sangre de Cristo range.
Visitors are welcome to camp at Mueller State Park year-round. However, if you're camping in an RV, only 32 electric sites are available in the off-season. The park's comfort station is open year-round, but winter campers are advised to bring their own drinking water.
When you're ready to wrap up your RV camping trip at Mueller State Park, you'll find stacks of urban attractions and stunning scenery to explore nearby. Head north up CO-67 to grab some gas and supplies in Divide, then set out to discover what the surrounding area has to offer.
Immerse yourself in Colorado's ancient natural history at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, a 12-mile trek west of the park in nearby Florissant. Stop by the visitors' center for up-close views of the prehistoric fossils unearthed here, or set out to see petrified tree stumps along the self-guided nature trails. This area is also an excellent place to do a little stargazing.
Located 25 miles east of Mueller State Park, Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is the ideal destination for the spelunkers and thrillseekers in your crew. Hook yourself up to the zip line and whoosh 80 feet above the canyon, or get spooked on a lantern tour of the untouched Manitou Grand Caverns. You'll find an assortment of rides here to get your heart pumping, making this the perfect family-friendly attraction near Mueller State Park.
Colorado Springs is just 30 miles east and is a hot spot for outdoor adventurers and urbanites alike. See more of Colorado's postcard-perfect nature at Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, or Broadmoor Seven Falls. The kids will love a trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
