Nottingham Lake in Colorado is also known as Benchmark Lake Reservoir, on the western edge of the town of Avon in the Rocky Mountains. During the winter, this is a busy ski resort area, and during the summer, a great place for hiking, mountain biking, and water sports. Just a little south of the lake, and connected by a ski lift, is the resort of Beaver Creek, while a few miles east is the much larger Vail and its popular ski resort.

Getting Outdoors

Nottingham Lake is in the center of Harry A. Nottingham Park, which provides a large range of sporting activities. From soccer fields to basketball and tennis courts, there is plenty to do here, while the lake is used for swimming and stand up paddleboarding (SUP).

Camping at Nottingham Lake

The nearest campground to Nottingham Lake is the Eagle River Wolcott Campground. This is a primitive campground, administered by the Bureau of Land Management. There are no facilities here, so you will have to bring everything with you in your rental RV. That said, it is a spectacular location with stunning views of the mountains.

Exploring the Area

The mountains have very particular types of plants, and a great way to learn about them would be a visit to the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail. The gardens are free to enter, and along with being a beautiful place to spend a few hours, they are the highest botanical garden in North America. Winding paths connect the various different areas, interspersed with waterfalls, streams, and water features.
