Florida is known for its many lakes, and one such lake that makes for an ideal motorhome camping trip is Lake George, one of the largest lakes in the sunshine state, and the largest lake to currently flow along the St. John’s River. Lake George is a freshwater lake that covers over 46,000 acres, spreading into four counties along the way. It’s a good idea to book an RV in Volusia County to explore the areas surrounding Lake George. Renting an RV makes travel in the area easy and convenient, and you can easily access the surrounding towns and cities, including Daytona Beach and DeLand.

Also known as Lake Welaka, the lake earned its present name of Lake George after a royal botanist from Britain chanced upon St. John’s River and the lake, and named the lake after his then British King George III. Used as a bombing and aerial mining range during World War II, the lake is under the operational control of the Naval Air Station of Jacksonville. Today, it is popular for its rich marine life and migratory birds.
