Pierson, FL, is also known as the “Fern Capital of the World.” As the title suggests, this town’s main product is growing ferns for floral arrangements and other decorations. Navigating through the town, you’ll spot 6200 acres of ferns being grown alongside roads, shaded by heavy netting to simulate the filtered light in dense woods.
The closest large town is Orlando, about 60 miles to the south. The Atlantic Ocean is only 30 miles to the east. The drive to the Gulf of Mexico is a longer one, about 100 miles to the west. Nearby attractions include a nudist resort, a wildlife park, riverboat and airboat tours, “mom n’ pop” type restaurants, and small theaters.
The Atlantic-coast beaches offer a number of activities, including water sports, shopping, Nascar races, and watching rocket launches at Cape Canaveral. Historic tours are also available in the older towns along the coast.
There are several national and state parks in the area that offer limitless activities, including kayaking, biking, horseback riding, and hiking. Birdwatching and wildlife-spotting is also popular here.
