Oxford is a city in Newton County, Georgia and certain areas of the city (most of it) is part of the Oxford Historic District (a designation given by the National Parks Board). It was established in 1839 by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a town and is the site where Oxford College of Emory University was born. The city has several sites that have been included on the National Register of Historic Places, such the Oxford Historic District and Orna Villa, which was used as a Civil War hospital (it was built in 1825). Some famous people who hailed from Oxford were frontier lawman Heck Thomas and blues musician Cora Mae Bryant. One of the opening scenes (the car jump scene) from the TV show Dukes of Hazzard was shot on the college grounds.
