Union Point, Georgia, was created from a railroad junction in 1834; however, the area was first settled in 1785 when the Bethesda Baptist Church, one of the oldest in the state, was established. The city is home to numerous historic residential and commercial buildings, such as the Chipman-Union Hosiery Mill; many of these buildings incorporate Victorian-style architecture and are still standing today. The city became a stopover for train passengers and a resort for vacationers from larger cities. Today the town is a popular tourist destination with a walking-biking trail to Athens, a restored 1940's movie theater and an annual foot race. The “Run For Your Life Race” series is a five-kilometer race incorporating stationary obstacles and not-so-stationary zombies. The race may have been inspired by the TV show The Walking Dead, which is set in the state of Georgia.
