Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is situated on the southeast portion of Hawaii Island, which also goes by the name "Big Island." The tiny community of Volcano is found just outside the park's boundaries, while the nearest real town is Keaau, located around 20 miles to the northeast. The nearest city is Hilo, which is almost 30 miles to the north.

There are so many unique things to do here! Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers attractions that aren't commonly found in other places. From active lava flows to ash falls and lava tubes to discover and explore, you won't find yourself bored with a visit to this park!

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will give you the chance to experience all the unique opportunities it makes available. As its name would suggest, there are plenty of volcanoes that can be viewed at this park. The infamous Kilauea Volcano is one of these, and Mauna Loa is another. There is a Visitor's Center on-site that gives information on the history and workings of the volcanoes as well as the ecosystems that develop on the leftover lava flows. In some places, active lava chutes can be viewed.

There are a couple of scenic drives that can be enjoyed at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the Crater Rim Drive Tour and the Chain of Craters Road. There are numerous scenic overlooks found along these routes. There are also places to enjoy a picnic lunch and prime photography spots. Some of the park's hiking trails are accessed off these roads as well. Some of these lead to unique sites, such as petroglyphs that were left on the rocks by the ancient tribes who first settled here. There is also the Hōlei Sea Arch that was created by erosion.

There are numerous hiking trails found throughout the park, as well. They range in both their length and their difficulty levels. Some are easy nature trails, such as Devastation Trail, that is paved and meanders through an ash fall from an eruption that occurred in the '50s. Another is a short hike that takes visitors to an overlook of the Keanakāko‘i Crater. Visitors should be aware that many of these trails sit at high altitudes, some as much as 10,000 feet or more.

Outside of the national park, there are not many campgrounds available locally. Fortunately, if you're just looking for a quick place to stop overnight, there is a Walmart within a 20-mile drive of the park.
