Getting Outdoors

The biggest draw to Lake Cascade State Park is, of course, the lake itself. Lake Cascade attracts many fishermen and women to its waters year in, year out, and it is easy to see why. The lake is home to a wide range of fish species, each one providing excellent sport for Lake Cascade State Park campers. Campers can catch fish ranging from rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, to coho salmon, kokanee salmon, and much more. The statewide record for coho salmon was also caught at Cascade Lake, evidence of how good the fishing here is.

It is not only the fishing that is worthwhile at Lake Cascade State Park, but boating is also a great way of spending your time here. The state park alone has several boat launching ramps along the lake - making accessing the water with a boat simple. Those motorhome camping without their own boats should worry too much, Lake Cascade State Park rents out a number of water-going vessels to enjoy out on the water. These include pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Lake Cascade is most famous for its water-skiing, and with no motor-size limit, campers can let loose on the water.

The lakeside recreation is not all that brings in the visitors, Lake Cascade State Park has a landscape of extreme natural beauty and an ecosystem to match. Much of this wildlife can be seen on the hiking trails that crisscross the park. Wildlife such as deer, raccoons, black bears, eagles, elk, and even cougars can be seen in this area of Idaho. The trails that run throughout the park differ in both length and difficulty, making them perfect for both beginner and expert hikers.

Exploring the Area

Boise, one of Idaho’s largest cities and capital, is only an hour’s drive south from Lake Cascade State Park. The city is full of must-see sights and day-tripping opportunities for the whole family. The Old Idaho State Penitentiary is a must-see for anyone interested in America’s social history. Functioning as a prison form 1872 to 1970, it was then placed on the register for historic places in 1973. Visitors can take a tour of this historic prison and view its many exhibitions showcasing what life was like for its staff and prisoners.

Those with a keen eye for all things flora should not pass up on the opportunity to visit Boise’s ‘Idaho Botanical Gardens.’ The gardens cover fifty acres of land and are home to several stylized gardens. These include the English Garden, Herb Garden, Idaho Native Plant Garden, and the Water Garden. Visitors can wander around these gardens at their leisure, taking in the peaceful setting and the picturesque ambiance of the gardens. Formerly the State Penitentiary Gardens, the Idaho Botanical Gardens also have their own unique state history.

Campers with an interest in wildlife should take a visit to the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise. The center is home to hundreds of endangered birds of prey, such as hawks, falcons, eagles, and owls. Through interpretive displays and multi-media shows and live demonstrations with the birds, visitors can learn about the lives, behaviors, and habitats of these endangered birds.
