Idaho anglers will be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque setting to cast their lines in the entire state. Payette Lake is also home to a wide range of fish species, each with their very own unique sporting characteristics. The lake is best known for its populations of mackinaw or lake trout. There are also abundant numbers of rainbow trout, brook trout, largemouth bass, and kokanee salmon. The lake is most prized by those using fly-fishing techniques as live baits are not allowed on Payette Lake. Whether Payette Lake campers choose to fish from the twenty-one miles of shoreline or a boat out on the lake, it will definitely be a day fishing they will never forget.
Camping at Payette Lake
For those RV camping at Payette Lake, there are a handful of choices. McCall Campground directly south of the lake offers a range of amenities for RV campers. Hookups here include 20, 30, 50 amp electric, sewer, and water hookups. There is an onsite dump station, laundrette, and swimming pool. With many pull-thru sites, all sized rigs are welcomed at the McCall campground. Free WiFi is also provided for today’s modern campers.
Exploring The Area
For those with an appetite for history should head to the ‘Central Idaho Historical Museum’ in the town of McCall. The museum covers over four acres and consists of eight structures and a plethora of exhibits. The wide range of exhibits focuses on regional subjects such as the McCall Mill, logging history, and the history of the forest. Take a guided tour around the ‘Fire Warden’s House,' built-in 1937 it is listed on the register of historic places and is a perfect example of American rustic architecture. Or take a tour around the machine shop, with its forge and welding equipment, exhibiting the history of logging and milling in the area.
