Lake Springfield is nestled into the southeastern suburbs of Illinois’ capital, Springfield. Situated at the confluence of Interstate's 72 and 55, the lake is easily accessible from almost every corner of the state. Its excellent warm water fishing opportunities combined with its proximity to the cities of Bloomington and Decatur, make it a popular destination for motorhome camping.

Lake Springfield was originally built by a local power plant in the early 20th century. Although its original purpose was to serve as a source of drinking water for the city of Springfield, and as cooling water for the power plant, the lake quickly became a popular recreational spot. Excellent fishing, picturesque boating, and refreshing swimming are all on offer when you book an RV in Sangamon County!

Getting Outdoors

Although much of the city-side of the lake’s shoreline is occupied by private housing, the relatively untouched southern shoreline presents ample opportunity to get out and about in the great outdoors when you rent a camper near Lake Springfield.

Don’t forget to bring your own boat when you are camping near Lake Springfield! Encompassing an impressive 4,260 acres, launching a boat onto these vast waters is the best way to explore all of the lake’s hidden bays and secluded coves. The six public boat launch areas situated in each of the lakeside parks makes accessing the waters a piece of cake. Even better, there are no speed restrictions on the waters, making it a mecca for jet skiers and wakeboarders. Just don’t forget to purchase the applicable licenses from the Lake Springfield Marina before you start your activities!

RV camping at Lake Springfield is also a popular activity amongst keen anglers who come for the lake’s diverse population of game fish. In fact, over fifteen different species of sport fish have been recorded at Lake Springfield including white crappie, largemouth bass, and tiger muskie. Although fishing is allowed from the shoreline, fishers should ensure they are further than 100 feet away from any private property. To be safe, why not head out on to the waters and fish from the comfort of your own boat!

Taking a dip in Lake Springfield’s refreshing waters is the perfect way to cool down on a hot summers day. Although there are no active lifeguards on duty, there are several designated swimming areas attached to the public parks. Those taking their boat out onto the waters will be glad to know that swimming from boats is permitted, but only during daylight hours.

Camping at Lake Springfield

Although there are no campgrounds situated on the banks of Lake Springfield, there are plenty of places to park up your RV rental in the surrounding area. In addition to a well-equipped KOA, campers can find several independently owned campgrounds too.

The closest campground is Ozarks Highland RV Park, which is just a short ride north of Lake Springfield. Although this site mainly caters to long-termers, it does set aside several pitches for daily walk-ins. As well as full hookups for your rental RV, travelers can enjoy the onsite swimming pool, coin-operated laundry facilities, and per-friendly pitches!

For those heading south from Lake Springfield, consider staying at Lambert’s Café RV Park. This family-operated campground has been going since 1999 and has maintained an excellent reputation ever since. Providing all of the facilities a traveler could need, this RV boasts 37 fully-serviced sites, all of which are pull-thru friendly and can accommodate rigs of up to 75 foot long.

Exploring the Area

No Lake Springfield camping trip would be complete without a day trip into the nearby city of Springfield. Put on the map as Abraham Lincoln’s hometown; there are plenty of historical sites to discover that document the former president’s fascinating life. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is one of Springfield’s most visited attractions. At the center of this 12-acre park stands the home where Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861. Visitors can take a wander around the home as well as several other historical buildings that make up the rest of the park.

For a more in-depth study into the life of this much-loved president, take a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. With over 40,000 square feet of high-tech exhibition space, visitors can learn about the life, death, and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Witness a holographic rendition of the 1860 Presidential Election, discover the White House as it appeared in the 19th century and take photos with life-sized models of Lincoln as a child and an adult.

Of course, there are other non-Lincoln related attractions to explore in Springfield as well. The Henson Robinson Zoo is home to over 80 species of animals from all over the world and is a great option for a fun-filled, family day out. Children and adults alike will enjoy learning all about different animals from Australia, Africa, Asia, and America whilst exploring the zoo’s extensive grounds. Stop by the barn on your adventures for a chance to feed some of the more familiar farm animals!
