Discover Turkey Run State Park

Getting Outdoors

Regardless of whether you like fishing, canoeing, hiking, or just spending time in nature, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your time in Turkey Run State Park. Wildlife watchers are also well catered for, and you could catch a glimpse of everything from deer to turkey vultures while out exploring the park’s hiking trails.

Once you’ve set up camp, the ideal way to start your Turkey Run State Park RV camping adventure is to head to Sugar Creek. This pretty creek is a hive of activity in the summer months and one of the most popular canoeing spots in Indiana. Canoe rentals are available near the park if you want to paddle on the water.

Fishing is another popular pastime, with the waters of Sugar Creek home to bluegill, bass, and several other species. Boat access to the creek is found just outside the park, and you’ll have a lovely time taking in the scenery while you wait for a bite.

While the creek is undoubtedly a highlight, Turkey Run State Park is probably best known for its hiking trails. There are more than 10 trails to choose from, ranging in length from around half a mile up to three miles, offering spectacular views of vast canyons, hemlock forests, and imposing sandstone cliffs.

Turkey Run also has a nature center that’s open all year round, with guided hikes, naturalist programs, and a planetarium all available. And if you’re looking for a spot to cool off in summer (swimming in Sugar Creek is prohibited), there’s a large swimming pool that’s always popular with kids.

Camping at Turkey Run State Park

If you want to camp with an RV at Turkey Run State Park, you’ll be pleased to know that the park’s 213-site campground is RV-friendly. All sites come with electrical hookups, and restrooms and showers are also provided.

Most are back-in campsites, but there are also a small number of pull-through sites that can accommodate RV rentals of 50 feet or longer. An RV dump station is also available, along with fire rings and drinking water.

Leashed pets are welcome in the campground, and if you need to stock up on any essential camping supplies, you’ll find a camp store located nearby.

Exploring the Area

You’ll find plenty of interesting history to explore throughout the park. The Colonel Richard Lieber Cabin houses a museum that celebrates the achievements of the man considered the father of Indiana's state park system, or you can explore a log church built in 1871. The pretty Narrows Covered Bridge, which crosses Sugar Creek, also dates back to the 1880s.

Cross the suspension bridge over Sugar Creek to find yourself in the Rocky Hollow-Falls Canyon Nature Preserve. This 1,609-acre park is home to old-growth forest and sandstone canyons, so every trail you tackle should give you a taste of the area’s rugged natural beauty.

Once you’ve ticked off all the items on your Turkey Run State Park to-do list, you can then head out and explore a wide range of attractions nearby. Shades State Park, a great spot for hiking and canoeing, is a 20-minute drive to the northeast, or you can head east and be at Lake Waveland in around 10 minutes.

If you’d prefer to head toward a major center, Terre Haute and Bloomington are within easy reach, while Indianapolis is around 70 miles to the east. Terre Haute is known for its gourmet dining and educational museums, including the Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center and Swope Art Museum. Bloomington’s WonderLab Science Museum is a perfect outing for the kids, while the adults might want to visit Oliver Winery.

If you’re looking for a peaceful state park where you can spend some quality time in the great outdoors, this much-loved state park is definitely worth a look. Rent a camper near Turkey Run State Park, book yourself a campsite, and get out there and start exploring.
