Hutchinson is the county seat of Reno County in the state of Kansas, and is about an hour's drive northwest of Wichita; it was founded in 1871 when the Santa Fe Railway built a town where its railroad crossed the Arkansas River. It was nicknamed “Temperance City” because its founder, Clinton CC Hutchinson, prohibited alcohol (this was even before Prohibition was established nationwide). It was incorporated as a city in 1872. Hutchinson was one of many Kansas sites that housed prisoners of war during World War II; the prisoners provided manual labor to cover the shortage of workers who were off fighting the war. Hutchinson is a popular shooting location and has appeared in several Hollywood movies and TV shows; it has also been mentioned in several novels.

RV rentals in Reno County are your best bet for finding the RV unit that is perfect for you. While you are here, consider checking out some other nearby towns and cities. Ellsworth began as an 1870's cowtown and is now the trading hub for Ellsworth County. Pratt has been mentioned in the TV show Prison Break, and Stephen King's novel The Stand. Your Hutchinson travel trailer rental is your guarantee of a relaxing and interesting vacation.

The Great Outdoors

Cheney State Park is a cultivated outdoor recreation area centered around Cheney Lake, a reservoir that was built in 1964. It is a popular destination for fishing, stocked with channel catfish, white and striped bass, and other fish species. The lake has numerous boat launching lanes and a pier where guests can also fish from the shore. There are several designated swimming areas, and it is a popular destination for sailing enthusiasts.

Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge is a wildlife preserve divided into two areas, a wildlife area, and a refuge area. Fishing, hunting, and trapping are permitted in the park, but the refuge area is off limits to all public activities. The park is a good place to engage in bird watching; it has a large, diverse marsh area that attracts numerous bird species such as waterfowl and sandhill cranes. Keep your Hutchinson RV rental close by, and you can retire in comfort when your day's activities have been completed.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a nature preserve protecting the tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once dominated North America but is now almost completely gone. The park has accessible hiking trails and a visitors center with exhibits. Some of the trails are wheelchair accessible in dry weather and the trails, in general, are open 24 hours a day, year-round. There are comfort stations, picnic areas, and benches for the public to use.

Exploring The City

Hutchinson has some unique attractions that are certain to interest visitors, starting with an operational salt mine that also serves as a local museum. It begins with an elevator ride down into the mine followed by exhibits and a presentation and, finally, by a tram ride into the mine itself. There are other museums and a nature center that will entertain both young and old, and the Kansas State Fairgrounds which hosts the state fair and other events in between. One local stage theater offers quality plays produced locally and other events in a small yet intimate setting. Visitors will appreciate the good acoustics and solid acting and directing from a non-professional cast (although you wouldn't realize it once the show has begun). Don't forget to take your Hutchinson motorhome rental for a spin around the countryside.

When dinnertime rolls around, Hutchinson has an extensive selection of cuisines and restaurants on hand; most are locally owned and operated, and the prices are reasonable.
