Prairie Dog State Park is located just outside of the small town of Norton, Kansas, in the plains of northern Kansas, close to the Nebraska border. The park is a 30-minute drive north of Lenora and two hours' drive from Kearney, NE. Rent an RV near Prairie Dog State Park, and you can enjoy water recreation on Keith Sebelius Lake.

As you might expect, prairie dogs are prevalent in this area. Within the park, you will find a huge colony of them, as well as many other wildlife species. This park is also home to some notable historical sites; here, you'll find the last remaining adobe house in Kansas, which was built at the end of the 19th century. There is also a preserved one-room schoolhouse from the same era.

In addition to seeing the prairie dogs, you'll also get to explore the vast open plains of Kansas. You can also go bicycling on many of the roads that run throughout the state park, or bike into the nearby town of Norton.

Near the state park, you'll find Norton Wildlife Area, which is a popular destination for hunting. Resident wildlife species include rabbits, pheasants, and waterfowl, and you will also find several species of deer and furbearers too. Be sure to stick to Kansas hunting regulations while visiting the park. You can stop by the on-site ranger station to learn more about hunting regulations and permits.

RV camping at Prairie Dog State Park is very convenient, with a total of 79 RV camping sites. A majority of the sites have electric and water access, while some have only electrical connections. There are shower and restroom facilities on-site that are centrally located for your convenience. There are also two RV dump stations in the park.

Praire Dog State Park has picnic sites where you can relax and enjoy a meal outdoors. There are not any fire rings at the park, but you are allowed to set up your own fire ring. There is also a ranger station where you will be able to access any necessary information for your trip. Stop by the park's retail store to pick up bait and tackle, ice, drinks and snacks, and other concessions.

Exploring The Area

You'll also find other essentials like urgent care centers, pharmacies, banks, and anything else you might need while you are traveling. Although Norton is a small town, there are a few fun attractions worth checking out during your visit. The first is the Norton County Historical Museum, which documents the history of the area in great detail. Elmwood Park is a great place to spend time outdoors, with baseball fields, a frisbee golf course, a skate park, and more. The Norton Aquatic Center is also worth a visit on a hot summer day - the center features several pools, diving boards, and slides. The city also has a local rec center and golf course.
