Getting Outdoors

There's a whole lot to see and do in Lovewell State Park, but the main attraction for most visitors is the abundance of water sports on offer.

If you're a keen angler, this park is probably already on your list of must-visit destinations. The reservoir is well-known for its excellent fishing, with walleye, white bass, crappie, catfish, and more all caught here. The park has its own marina where you can grab a bite to eat and stock up on fishing and boating supplies. Two lighted fish cleaning stations are also provided to help you prepare the day's catch for dinner. Two-lane boat ramps are available at the marina and at Cedar Point.

If fishing isn't your cup of tea, you might like to make the most of the lake by using it to cool off in the summer heat. Located between the Cedar Point and Pioneer Campgrounds, the Lovewell State Park swimming beach is a popular spot with swimmers and sunbathers alike. Ample shade is also available near the beach if you need to spend some time out of the sun.

Finally, sports and outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of other activities to enjoy when camping at Lovewell State Park. For example, your family might like to tackle the park's challenging disc golf course, or practice your aim at the seven-station, 14-target archery range. Basketball hoops, a playground, horseshoe pits, and sand volleyball are all available as well, so there's no excuse not to stay active and enjoy the great outdoors on your Lovewell State Park camping adventure.

Camping at Lovewell State Park

If you want to camp with an RV at Lovewell State Park, you're spoiled for choice with six campgrounds available. So, after you rent an RV in Jewell County, check out park maps and site descriptions to find the perfect place to set up camp during your stay. The number and type of sites and facilities vary depending on the campground you choose:

  • Pioneer. Located towards the southern end of the park, Pioneer Campground features 20 primitive sites with lake views. A playground and swimming beach are also nearby.
  • Willow. Willow Campground is found near the park's northern end and features 15 full-hookup sites, 32 electric and water sites, and a large number of primitive sites. All sites have lake views, a shower house is provided, and the archery range is nearby.
  • Cottonwood. Boasting 44 primitive sites and 30 sites with electrical and water, Cottonwood Campground boasts a central location near the archery range.
  • Cedar Point. Cedar Point Campground features one full-hookup site, 21 electrical and water sites, ten electric sites, and 44 primitive sites. Some sites enjoy lake views, and there's a swimming beach nearby.
  • Walleye Point. Found near the park's southern tip, the Walleye Point Campground offers over 100 primitive sites, four full-hookup sites, nine electric and water sites, and five electric sites. It also features a shower house, is close to the marina, and is open all year round.
  • Southwinds. RV campers will find six full-hookup sites in this campground, which features a shower house and is also close to the beach.

A small number of camping cabins are also available in the Pioneer, Walleye Point, and Southwinds Campgrounds.

Finally, if you want to visit Lovewell State Park with a dog, pets are permitted in the campgrounds. Just make sure to clean up after your pooch and keep them leashed at all times.

Exploring the Area

When you're ready to hit the road again after your Lovewell State Park RV camping adventure, you'll be pleased to discover that there are plenty of other great attractions worth visiting nearby.

For example, if you want to spend a little more time exploring the Kansas state parks system, you'll find Glen Elder State Park less than an hour's drive southwest near Cawker City. This is a firm favorite with wildlife photographers and history buffs keen to explore the living history museum.

If you decide to head southeast towards Manhattan, make sure you spend some time exploring the excellent Flint Hills Discovery Center. Kids and adults alike will love exploring the garden terrace showcasing plants native to the region.

And if you choose Salina as your next destination, it's less than a two-hour drive away. Once you arrive and set up camp, be sure to meet the animals at the Rolling Hills Zoo.
