The one-mile Dune Trail is a great place to start; it leads you to the summit of a 40-foot dune and then down into a pretty wetland area. While you're out hiking, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for some of the native wildlife that calls this park home. In particular, it's worth tackling the Pond Trail, which features two wildlife observation blinds and wanders for a mile and a half. From these lookout points, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of ducks, geese, and a variety of migratory birds, as well as deer, muskrats, and more. Many hiking trails at Sand Hills State Park are also open to horseback riding, so it's entirely up to you how you want to explore your pristine surrounds. The Rolling Hills Trail is the perfect choice for horseback riders, leading you around several impressive dunes and offering the longest route in the park at just under four miles. Finally, if you love fishing, you'll also want to pack a rod or two in the motorhome rental. While not well-known as a fishing destination, Sand Hills State Park also features a five-acre pond where you might be lucky enough to catch a channel catfish or two.
