Frankfort is the capital city of Kentucky and is located between Lexington and Louisville along Interstate 64. Despite its importance to the state, it is one of the smallest capital cities in the USA. The city was established as a settlement in 1786, but would not be incorporated until much later in 1835. After Kentucky became the 15th state in the Union, a commission of Kentucky statesmen from all corners of the state was tasked with selecting a new capital, and they eventually settled on Frankfort.

Frankfort might not have as many attractions as neighboring Louisville or Lexington, but it sure can pack a punch for such a small city. The buildings of Frankfort alone are quite impressive, and often times quite old. The Old Capitol Building and the new State Capitol building sit on the banks of the Kentucky River at the Capitol Annex where all state government operates from. The capitol buildings and the old Governor's Mansion can be toured while visiting, and wonderful views of the river make the experience memorable. The Josephine Sculpture Park is a lovely scenic botanical garden full of sculpted masterpieces from around the world. It is open each day until sunset. Kentucky Military History Museum, the Capital City Museum, and the Liberty Hall Historic Site are a trio of fantastic learning experiences where lots can be discovered about over 200 years of Kentucky history. Last but certainly not least, check out some of the famous bourbon distilleries in the area, where some of the world’s best bourbon whiskies are made.
