Near the center of Kentucky, between Louisville and Lexington, is the popular outdoor destination of Taylorsville Lake State Park. This state park was originally built for flood control of the Salt River in 1983, and in modern-day is an extensive state park with a large lake. Taylorsville Lake covers over 3,000 acres when at its average capacity and has over 75 miles of shoreline for guests to explore. The lake and park are named after Richard Taylor, an early pioneer landowner who donated the first 60 acres of land for the town of Taylorsville.

Fishing in Taylorsville Lake requires a fishing license, so be sure to get your licenses sorted out while arranging the details of your rental RV. There are both large and smallmouth bass, channel and blue catfish, black and white crappie, bluegill, redear, sunfish, white and hybrid bass, and even saugeye found in the lake.

Many bird-watching opportunities also exist around the state park, sometimes from special platforms and other times while exploring the extensive trail system. The forests in Taylorsville Lake State Park are mature and home to an abundance of species to search out, and there are even American Bald Eagles that often nest within park boundaries. Other prominent species found in the park include hawks, sparrows, hummingbirds, tufted titmouse, cedar waxwing, cardinals, and grouse.

Camping at Taylorsville Lake State Park will give you unbridled access to the 24-mile trail system that is well maintained and mapped out. This trail system is shared between hikers, bikers, and equestrians, and there are many different trailheads from which you’ll be able to start a hike. The main state park owned campground has over 40 full-service RV compatible campsites to choose from, depending on availability. Other campsites owned by the state are specially designed for equestrians with hitching posts, small paddocks, and plenty of parking space for trailers.

All of the campsites can be reserved ahead of your stay, so when you want a specific type of campground to be sure to book it after securing your RV rental. The campgrounds are not open all year round, and the typical season runs from the start of April until the middle of December. Pets are allowed in the campgrounds so long as they are kept restrained.

Exploring the Area

Although Taylorsville is one of the closest towns, it doesn’t have much to offer in the way of entertainment options and historical sites. There are a few restaurants to enjoy in Taylorsville, including a locally owned bar and grill, a Mexican restaurant, and a small collection of national chain fast-food brands. Taylorsville also has a few gas stations that can easily accommodate large RVs, so you won’t have to drive far to fill up your tank when you camp in an RV near Taylorsville.

Louisville, to the northwest, is home to a large international airport, which makes it easy to fly in and pick up your RV. There are also many other exciting things to see in this large city, including museums, theaters, and delicious restaurants to share with the family. Museums include Tattoo Charlie’s Tattoo Museum, Colonel Sanders Museum, the Speed Art Museum, the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, the Thomas Edison House, The Frazier History Museum, Muhammad Ali’s Childhood Home, a vintage fire station, and various country-themed museums.

Louisville is also home to the many family-orientated destinations, including the Louisville Zoo, which is home to many diverse species, the Louisville Mega Cavern, which is an underground bike park and zip line adventure park, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, which is home the iconic bat, and the Waterfront Park, a massive green space with paths and playgrounds. Adults may enjoy a visit to the Churchill Downs, a world-renowned horse-racing track, which is also easily accessible when you rent a camper near Taylorsville Lake State Park.
