Sprawling across 175 acres in Taconic Valley, 14 miles south of Petersburg, Cherry Plain State Park is the perfect place for those who enjoy woodland walks, boating, sunbathing on a tranquil beach, and camping in an RV. This cozy park boasts an array of outdoor activities, and its woods are also home to white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beaver, and even moose.

One of the state park’s focal points is Black River Pond, where water lovers and anglers often spend the majority of their camping trip. Adjacent to its banks is the picnic area, where families come to spend time together, eat, play catch, and relax.

Guests who come here in an RV rental typically book an RV in Renssalaer County. Alternatively, find a camper in one of the nearby towns like Petersburg or New Lebanon, both of which are around 20 minutes away from the state park.

Getting Outdoors

The Capital District Wildlife Management Area surrounds the park, which means you get to enjoy over 4,000 acres of forest. Both Cherry Plain and the surrounding wildlife management area are popular among hikers, hunters, and wildlife watchers. The hiking trails, suitable for both experienced and novice hikers, take you to some of the most scenic sights the park can offer. During winter, those same trails are used for cross-country skiing, so there are lots of activities for Cherry Plain State Park campers to enjoy regardless of the season.

Fishing at Cherry Plain State Park is also very fulfilling. You'll be surrounded by calm waters and a serene atmosphere. Pick a spot either somewhere along the banks or find one with a boat. As far as the fish species go, you might catch bullhead, bass, or pickerel. You can even go ice fishing during winter.

Black River Pond also has a designated swimming area, which stays busy during the summer holidays. RV campers come here to beat the heat, play with their families, build sandcastles, or simply catch some Zs while sunbathing. There's a playground area near the beach, so if your little ones need to let loose, this is the perfect place to do it.

Camping at Cherry Plain State Park

The Cherry Plain State Park campground features around 30 sites for either tent or RV campers. The RV campsites are all primitive. There are no hookups, and the park can't accommodate vehicles longer than 15 feet. In other words, look for a smaller camper rental for your Cherry Plain State Park camping trip.

Despite the lack of hookups, the park has other amenities. You'll have access to restrooms, showers, and drinking water near the campground. Guests also have access to picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. You can also choose between waterfront campsites and wilderness campsites, both of which are pet-friendly. Lastly, you can book your site via phone or online.

Exploring the Area

RV camping is an excellent opportunity to venture outside of the park and explore the state of New York. If your gas tank needs a refill, the nearest gas stations are in Stephentown and Berlin. If you want to explore a more urban environment with a wider selection of restaurants, museums, and galleries, you should make your way to Troy, located just 20 miles away from the park. As far as the cuisine options go, you'll find pizza, sushi, Italian, Greek, Moroccan, Korean, and Lebanese, as well as the usual places serving burgers, fast food, and pastries.

While in Troy, visit the Burden Iron Works Museum to learn more about the importance of the iron industry to the region. The settlements around the Hudson River were among the first to implement technology to stimulate economic development and growth. The area's iron industry also pioneered some of the inventions we still rely on today, from horseshoes to fire hydrants.

Anyone who is in touch with their artistic side will love Troy, as the city is home to multiple galleries with amazing exhibits. One of the highlights is the Scarlet Seven Gallery. You'll see vintage-style paintings, various figurines, sculptures, photographs, and so much more. You'll definitely find something you like if you want to decorate your living room back home.

Another tourist attraction in these parts is The Hirsch Observatory. Whether you've been to an observatory before or it's your first time, this is sure to be an incredible experience for kids and adults alike. The observatory is used for research purposes by students and academics, but visitors also get to see the distant mysteries of the cosmos up close. If you happen to be around on a clear night, definitely pay the observatory a visit.
