Limekiln Lake is a cultivated outdoor recreational area that is open to the public from around mid-May to early September each year. The lake is a short distance from the hamlet of Old Forge. It's a popular outdoor attraction where you can enjoy most water activities such as swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking, and more. Water skiing and power boating are allowed, and on a warm summer day, you can expect to see sailboats out on the lake. RV camping at Limekiln Lake means you can sit back and watch the sailboats or join in the fun on the beach, only steps away.

If fishing is your thing, the lake has a variety of fish species such as bluegill and yellow perch. If you'd rather keep your feet on dry land, there are golf courses nearby where you can squeeze in a few rounds, the Adirondack Museum, which has exhibits covering the region, and a water park (also located in Old Forge). In the winter, you can hit the slopes at McCauley Mountain Ski Center to do some downhill skiing; the mountain is open in the summer and fall as well, so you can ride the ski lift to the peak and enjoy the panoramic views.

Getting Outdoors

When you're ready to head farther out, Siamese Ponds Wilderness is a year-round outdoor recreational area worth visiting; it's a two-hour drive from Limekiln Lake, so plan on making it a full day or overnight trip. You can hike in the summer and enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. It has more than a dozen marked trails you can easily follow, and there are more challenging unmarked trails as well. The landscape is a combination of mountains, forests, and water bodies, creating diverse hiking scenery; keep an eye out for the moose, deer, and bear that reside here. The area is popular for rock climbing.

Another potential destination is Moose River Plains, a series of river valleys lying between rolling hills and several small mountains. Little Moose Mountain and Marbury Mountain are somewhat larger exceptions to this but are also found here. Moose River Plains has several well-marked hiking trails that will take you past the dozens of lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams. If you want to do some primitive camping, this is where you'll find it.

Independence River Wild Forest is a year-round outdoor recreational area with lakes and rivers, wetlands, and rolling hills. Activities to enjoy here include hiking, horseback riding, paddling, and boating in the summer, and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter. One of the trails leads to a historic fire tower built in 1912; the wooden structure was replaced with metal in 1919, and it offers panoramic views of the area for miles in every direction. The forest has access roads, some of which are plowed in the winter.

Camping at Limekiln Lake

The Limekiln Lake camping facilities make it easy to relax when you rent an RV near Old Forge. The campground has a picnic area with tables and grills, a swimming beach and bathhouse, a boat launch and canoe/kayak rentals, and a nature trail where you can stretch your legs. The campground's facilities include a dump station and recycling center, and restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets. The individual campsites at Limekiln Lake are primitive, with no hookups.

Thornbush Acres RV Park is another place to park your Old Forge motorhome rental. This quiet, seasonal RV campground has many campsites situated amongst the trees for maximum peace and tranquility. All of the campsites at Thornbush Acres are large and have pull-through access and full hookups, so staying here requires almost no effort on your part.

Exploring the Area

If you need to take a break and enjoy some urban amenities, Indian Lake has unique and interesting places to shop; one of them is a studio gallery where you'll find old and reasonably new books, local art, and antique furniture, to name a few items. Some of the items are original and can't be found anywhere else, making the store an oasis for those who like to browse. The town has several tour companies that offer whitewater rafting tours, but if your stomach is starting to growl, you can settle in for an enjoyable meal. Indian Lake has a small number of eateries that include several pub restaurants and a Mexican restaurant; most of them are inexpensive to reasonably priced.

Boonville is where you'll find an urban park, state park, and golf club that is open to the public. Both of the parks are scenic, but the state park has a waterfall for an added attraction. The town was created in 1795 and has a village within it that is also named Boonville. The town's museum has exhibits that document the history of the town and represent the local locks and canals that belong to the Erie Canal. If you need to grab a bite, there are several commercial chains where you can grab something quickly and a selection of locally owned establishments, such as diners, pub restaurants, and an Italian venue, for a more relaxing meal.
