When you're ready to head farther out, Siamese Ponds Wilderness is a year-round outdoor recreational area worth visiting; it's a two-hour drive from Limekiln Lake, so plan on making it a full day or overnight trip. You can hike in the summer and enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. It has more than a dozen marked trails you can easily follow, and there are more challenging unmarked trails as well. The landscape is a combination of mountains, forests, and water bodies, creating diverse hiking scenery; keep an eye out for the moose, deer, and bear that reside here. The area is popular for rock climbing. Another potential destination is Moose River Plains, a series of river valleys lying between rolling hills and several small mountains. Little Moose Mountain and Marbury Mountain are somewhat larger exceptions to this but are also found here. Moose River Plains has several well-marked hiking trails that will take you past the dozens of lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams. If you want to do some primitive camping, this is where you'll find it. Independence River Wild Forest is a year-round outdoor recreational area with lakes and rivers, wetlands, and rolling hills. Activities to enjoy here include hiking, horseback riding, paddling, and boating in the summer, and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter. One of the trails leads to a historic fire tower built in 1912; the wooden structure was replaced with metal in 1919, and it offers panoramic views of the area for miles in every direction. The forest has access roads, some of which are plowed in the winter.
