The southern region of central New York is dominated by dense forests, rolling hills, and many small interconnected towns. When you book an RV in Chemung County to explore the area south of the Finger Lakes Region, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor fun. The Newtown Battlefield State Park is part of this county and is a popular regional destination thanks to its rich history and beautiful landscape.

A stone monument rests atop the most prominent hill in Newtown Battlefield State Park and is dedicated to the battle of 1799 between the Continental Army, the British regulars, the Loyalist rangers, and more than 1,000 Iroquois Indian warriors. The battle is regarded as one of the largest offensive campaigns during the American Revolution. The modern park was built to its current state during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and has many facilities and informational placards for guests to enjoy.

Getting Outdoors

This part of New York is familiar with hot, muggy summers and cold, snowy winters, so no matter what time of year you visit, you’ll have diverse weather to keep you occupied. Newtown Battlefield State Park doesn’t have a ton to offer by itself except state park RV campgrounds, but there are plenty of outdoor attractions in close proximity to go explore. One of the nearest attractions is the Maple Hill State Forest, a great destination to visit while camping at Newtown Battlefield State Park.

This state forest is filled with wild animals to view, hiking trails to wander, and even a few bird-watching spots for quiet observation. The state forest is a registered state park and is open all year long, offering a drastically different landscape between the seasons. Thick foliage and rich green leaves are prominent during the summer months, while fall brings diverse colors and brisk weather. The wintertime landscape is often snow-covered and provides a great outlet for cross-country skiing, while spring is filled with blooms and fresh growth.

Other exciting activities in the area can be found with a drive to the north, as both Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake are within easy commuting distance. Both of these lakes are fantastic places to visit for fishing, swimming, boating, sunbathing, and all-around relaxing. There are many public access points on the southern reaches of the lakes, and some marinas will even rent out boats to visitors who don’t have their own.

Camping at Newtown Battlefield State Park

Motorhome camping in the area is easy thanks to two different campgrounds within close proximity of each other. The campgrounds at Newtown Battlefield have everything you’d expect while enjoying state park RV camping, including a dump station, a comfort station, playgrounds, showers, water fill-up stations, and more. These campgrounds are reservable ahead of time, so be sure to get your site picked out online or by telephone after you confirm the details of your rental RV.

Another campground in the area is just to the northeast and is Gardner Hill Campground. This campground is open all year long but has limited winter facilities, and reservations can also be made in advance. There are many large pull-thru sites here that have water, electric, and sewer hookups. Each campsite also has its own firepit, a grill, and moderate privacy thanks to thick trees. Communal recreational opportunities at this campground include a seasonal swimming pool, a fishing pond, horseshoe pits, and a playground for kids.

Exploring the Area

Because Waverly is right off the Southern Tier Expressway, and it is very easy to get to it while RV camping at Newtown Battlefield State Park.
