Windham High Peak is a mountain in New York State and is a short distance from the similarly-named town of Windham. The mountain is part of the Catskill Mountain Range, but unlike some of the more challenging mountains, hiking Windham High Peak is slightly challenging but not too much. Novices and those not familiar with the Catskills can begin by hiking here in preparation for tackling the other mountains. Water draining from the mountain finds its way north and east into the Hudson River or follows the southern slope into Batavia Kill creek, which eventually joins the Hudson.

The mountain has several marked trails that lead to the peak, where you'll experience exquisite views of the surrounding area. There are also access roads you can hike, which provide equally amazing views. The trails are several miles long; hiking the mountain and returning shouldn't take more than a few hours.

Getting Outdoors

Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest is a multi-use outdoor recreation area that protects the resident wildlife and water resources and allows timber harvesting. One of the water resources, Looking Glass Pond, has a boat dock and fishing pier, so you can fish on the water or from land as you wish. Rent a camper near Windham, and you can take your catch from the water straight to your fridge. There are picnic areas and viewing platforms in case you want your visit to be more relaxing and leisurely, but if you want to be more active, there are trails through the forest that accommodate hiking and mountain biking.

Kaaterskill Wild Forest is a part of the Catskill Forest Preserve and is a diverse landscape with a deep range of mountains, valleys, and waterfalls; the vegetation is primarily deciduous and boreal forest, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that change with the seasons. The forest has numerous hiking trails, some shorter, some longer, which can also be used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter; some of the trails allow snowmobiling. Park your Windham camper rental nearby, and you can end your outdoor travels in the warmth of your home-on-wheels.

Indian Head Wilderness is located in the eastern section of the Catskill Mountains. It has an extremely rugged terrain, offering challenging but beautiful vistas as you hike through. There are several marked trails you can follow, some short (or very short) and some longer; one of the longest trails is more than two dozen miles in length. There is a trail that passes through the forest (as well as other preserves) that crosses over most of the five large peaks within the forest, Plattekill, Indian Head, Twin, Sugarloaf, and Plateau.

Instead, try heading for Doherty's Mountain View Campground, a family-owned and operated RV campground in the Catskill Mountains. Amenities at this campground include restrooms with hot showers, a laundry room, and a general store. There is a horseshoe pitch, outdoor swimming pool, basketball court, and playground to entertain you if you want to relax on-site, and the campground is near many local attractions if you want to venture out.

Whip-O-Will Campground is a cultivated, full-service RV campground with just enough nature to make you forget about the city. The campground has a playground, a swimming pool, and a kiddie's pool, rowboat rentals, bocce ball, and more. If you need snacks or supplies, there is a camp store just steps away plus a snack bar and game room. Some of the campsites have full hookups and pull-through access for large motorhome rentals, and some are located on the waterfront. The lake has catch-and-release fishing, too.
