Devil's Tombstone Campground is a seasonal, state-owned RV campground that is open to the public from early June until early September each year. The campground is located next to Stony Clove Creek, a small stream fed by nearby Notch Lake. The campground is named after a large boulder, the Devil's Tombstone, which may have been left by glacial activity or a landslide. Early settlers believed that Stony Clove was haunted by the Devil.

While you're camping at Devil's Tombstone Campground, you can head a few miles east to North-South Lake Campground for some water recreation. The campground has a beach and a bathhouse, and visitors can canoe or kayak here, too. Back at Devil's Tombstone, hikers can access the Devil's Path Trail, which links to other systems, including the Indian Head Wilderness trails.

Indian Head Wilderness is part of the Catskill Forest Preserve and a popular hiking destination with five major peaks. It has several hiking trails that vary in length from less than a mile to several miles; there is a longer hike more than two dozen miles in length for those who would like a challenge. Hunter-West Kill Wilderness is situated on an elevated ridge running from east to west between two rivers, West Kill Creek and Esopus Creek. Certain parts of the ridge are very steep, rising as much as 2,000 feet or higher from the lowest levels. It has five mountain peaks that have been named and harbors two New York City reservoirs. You can go primitive tent camping off of the hiking trails if you wish. Most of the trails are short with one much longer trail.

Kaaterskill Wild Forest is a dramatic landscape that incorporates towering cliffs and waterfalls, sprawling mountains and deep valleys, with lush deciduous and boreal forest covering most of it. Of these, the Kaaterskill Falls are an iconic symbol of the forest and can be accessed from several hiking trails, some of which are gravel. The forest has snowmobile trails you can use, and you can go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on the hiking trails once snow has fallen. Winter or summer, the scenery is breathtaking.

Exploring the Area

If you need supplies for the motorhome rental or just a time out to pamper yourself, the town of Hunter is not too distant and a good source for fuel, groceries, restaurants, and more. The city has a cinema if you feel like catching a movie in the evening, a disc golf course, and a mountain resort with chair lifts to several mountain peaks. The resort is open year-round; you can ski and take lessons in the winter, or rent a condo in the summer to enjoy hiking the mountain.

For more urban comforts, head to Windham, a small town that dates back as far as 1788. The town has been nicknamed “Land in the Sky,” and with good reason, as it is a popular winter ski resort with New Yorkers. But, while many are drawn in by Windham Mountain, there is additionally much to see and do in the town itself. There is a vineyard and theater, a country club, and as much shopping as you can handle. The town has a wellness spa where you can reward yourself before heading out for an evening meal in one of the town's many restaurants. You'll find a variety of European cuisines on hand plus seafood restaurants and steakhouses; many of the venues are inexpensive to moderately priced, a final touch to your perfect vacation.

Phoenicia is a small hamlet but still one of the larger communities within the town of Shandaken; it is strategically located at the intersection of two highways and alongside Esopus Creek, making it both scenic and easy to access. It has an impressive number of attractions for its size, including a railway museum and a tour company that offers rides on a pedal-powered rail car along the nearby train tracks. There are a historical museum and a community theater. The hamlet has a small but reasonably varied selection of restaurants you can choose from, including several family diners, a steakhouse, a pizzeria, and more.
