Discover Carolina Beach State Park

Getting Outdoors

Carolina Beach State Park has been a popular coastal attraction for many years, and perhaps the main feature that draws visitors to the park is the fishing. Water is seemingly everywhere you look in the park — not only is it right on the banks of the freshwater Cape Fear River, but Myrtle Grove Sound and the Atlantic Ocean are both just a short boat ride away.

Campers can cast a line from the river bank, or set themselves up with a rod on the ADA-accessible fishing deck. If you've got a boat, a 54-slip marina and two boat ramps are provided. Flounder, sheepshead, and speckled trout are just some of the species on offer here, but remember that you'll need a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License if you want to wet a line.

When you need a break from fishing, you might want to set out on foot to explore the park's nine-mile trail network. The one-mile Campground Trail leads you through longleaf pine and oak forest, and is generally easy going. If you're traveling with kids, grab a brochure from the trailhead and set out to explore the Carolina Beach TRACK Trail, a quarter-mile self-guided hike for younger campers.

Of course, no trip to Carolina Beach State Park would be complete without getting up close and personal with the world-famous carnivorous plant known as the Venus flytrap. These remarkable plants are accessed via the half-mile Flytrap Trail and are well worth checking out.

Camping at Carolina Beach State Park

If you want to camp with an RV at Carolina Beach State Park, you can search for an RV in New Hanover County and then reserve a spot in the park's family campground.

Situated in a wooded area next to Snow's Cut, which is part of the Intercoastal Waterway, the campground has two types of sites:

  • No-hookup sites. 69 sites here don't have any hookups, but each site does have its own picnic table and grill or fire ring. Two sites are accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Full-hookup sites. The Carolina Beach State Park RV campground is also home to 10 sites with electrical, water, and sewer hookups. Each site has a picnic table and grill or fire ring, and one site is accessible to people with disabilities.

Whichever type of site you choose, you'll find drinking water, restrooms, and hot showers nearby. However, it's worth mentioning that if you're visiting during the warmer months, you'll probably want to pack some insect repellent to keep the bugs away.

If you're traveling with friends or family who don't have their RV to stay in, they might like to spend a few nights in one of the park's four camper cabins, each of which sleeps six people.

Exploring the Area

Carolina Beach State Park offers a memorable vacation spot for RV campers, but the time will inevitably come when you're ready to set off to explore new sights once again. Happily, you won't have to go too far before you find an attraction worth checking out.

Head a few minutes south to Kure Beach, from which you can access the pristine beaches of Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. If you choose to steer your rental RV north, Wilmington is less than 20 minutes away. While you're visiting this port city, make sure to check out the fascinating Battleship North Carolina museum. If you'd like to head a little further afield, Charlotte, home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, is just three and a half hours away.

It's entirely up to you where you head next, so when you rent a camper near Carolina Beach State Park, read up on other local attractions before your journey to make sure you don't miss any must-see attractions along the way.
