Located near the North Carolina and South Carolina border is where you will find Laurinburg. The city was named in 1785 after a local wealthy family known as the McLaurins. The city is known for its many historical buildings, which includes the 1904 Laurinburg Institute, a school designed for African Americans under the request of Booker T. Washington. Prior to the Civil War, the city was also an important railroad stop before the tracks were destroyed by Union troops.
