Cherokee Landing State Park is a cultivated outdoor recreation area on a peninsula extending into Lake Tenkiller in northeast Oklahoma. The park is open year-round from early morning to late afternoon, but its hours of operation could change with the weather. Lake Tenkiller is renowned for its boating, fishing, and water sports activities. The lake is home to white, largemouth, and smallmouth bass, catfish, and other varieties such as crappie. The park has a beach where you can swim or suntan, a playground, and a softball field, making it possible to enjoy individual or group activities. Cherokee Landing State Park is a short distance from the city of Tahlequah, where you can experience numerous landmarks firsthand. Getting Outdoors

Cookson Hills State Game Refuge is an outdoor recreation area that is primarily used for fishing and hunting in season. There is a primitive camping area use by hunters, and anglers can try their luck at any of the park's ponds or lakes. The landscape is a mixture of uplands, scattered meadows, and oak-hickory tree stands that dominate the rough and rocky hillsides. Hikers and nature enthusiasts have some public access; if you check the park out, keep your eyes open for the deer, elk, coyotes, and numerous other mammals and birds that call the refuge home. Camp with an RV near Cookson Hills State Game Refuge, and you can use your RV as an observation blind while enjoying its creature comforts.

Cherokee State Game Refuge is an outdoor recreation area divided into two sections, one for hunting year-round and the other for controlled hunting during certain seasons. The park consists of rolling hills with stands of oak-hickory trees in much of the area, mixed in with fields of native grass and undergrowth shrubs. Several streams run through the property, helping to maintain the vegetation as well as support the wildlife. The park has a primitive campground and a rifle range where you can practice shooting.

McClellan-Kerr Wildlife Management Area is a predominantly bottomland habitat with some farmland in places and streams running through the landscape. The area is spread over four separate counties and is flat with a big Oklahoma sky looming overhead. The park allows hunting for large and small game, as well as fishing for catfish and black bass.

Camping at Cherokee Landing State Park

There are several resorts and casinos just a short drive away if you'd like to try your luck at the tables. Exploring the Area

Hulbert is a small town with several monasteries; one of them was promoted to the status of "abbey." The town goes back to just before the turn of the 20th century. Today, it boasts an urban park and a small dining scene; if you're planning on eating here, you'll find a few restaurants within the city limits and a larger number a short distance away. Your choices include several chain-style restaurants and numerous locally operated establishments serving Mexican, Italian, and American style food.

Stilwell is a small city that was once proclaimed “Strawberry Capital of the World.” If you visit here, you'll find an urban park and a private ranch which is managed as a hunting site with primitive undisturbed landscape and white-tailed and axis deer, elk, and buffalo raised for hunting. If you get hungry during your visit, Stilwell has a small but varied restaurant scene with barbecue joints, pizzerias, and other venues serving traditional American food.
