Lake Hefner is a lake located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The city and the lake are both located entirely within Oklahoma County. Lake Hefner, which is actually a reservoir, was created in 1947 to serve as the water supply for Oklahoma City. The lake is named for Robert Hefner, the mayor of Oklahoma City, at the time.

The state, the county, and the city are all named for a Choctaw word, which literally means “red people.” The word was used by the Choctaw to describe Native American people as a whole and reflects Oklahoma’s heritage as territory initially designated for Native Americans. Oklahoma campers who love history will find many interesting opportunities around Lake Hefner. Hunting and fishing enthusiasts also enjoy Lake Hefner each year.

Travelers camping at Lake Hefner have access to just about everything they need because Lake Hefner is within Oklahoma City’s urban area. Visitors who want to experience other parts of the state can reach Stillwater in about an hour. Norman is about thirty minutes away, and Tulsa is about 90 minutes away.

Getting Outdoors

Lake Hefner offers campers many urban and wilderness opportunities. Much of the lake is surrounded by residential areas, but the south side is a largely undeveloped forest. Campers at Lake Hefner have access to two marinas. The Oklahoma City docks are the docks on the city side of the lake. The Oklahoma City Boat Club also operates a private marina. The Oklahoma Railway Museum has passenger cars, freight train cars, and a steam engine. The museum is dedicated to the history of rail travel and freight throughout the history of Oklahoma. The 45th Infantry Division Museum is a popular stop for military enthusiasts. The 45th Infantry was an Oklahoma Army National Guard unit that was activated during WWII. The division fought in Italy and Germany, through some of the most intense moments of the war in Europe. History enthusiasts camping with an RV at Lake Hefner might find this interesting.
