Discover Detroit Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips

Surrounded by mountain peaks that are often shrouded in mist, Detroit Lake is a serene gray-blue lake in beautiful Oregon. When the dam was constructed in 1953, the track of historical Oregon Pacific Railroad was flooded along with a handful of homes and the train depot. The lake supplies water to towns downriver, such as Salem. During dry years, it’s occasionally (but rarely) required to drain the water to supply these towns, and during those times, the tracks and remnants of buildings can be seen.

Getting Outdoors

Stretching over nine miles, Detroit Lake is in the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range. Dramatic, snow-capped Mount Jefferson dominates the views, though many other snowy peaks can be seen, peeking over mountain ridges in the distance in other directions. All along the shores, tall firs and pines tower, adding a hint of color to an otherwise muted landscape. There are five established swimming areas. However, because the lake is largely fed by snowmelt, it can be quite chilly even well into summer.

Camping at Detroit Lake

Waking up surrounded by nature is the fantasy of many outdoor lovers. Skip the noisy hotel neighbors, rent an RV, and park it along the shores of Detroit Lake. There are a handful of public and private campgrounds, all with different levels of services and amenities. RV camp at Detroit Lake State Recreation Area, which boasts over 100 sites with full hookups, 68 with partial (no sewer), and flush toilets and showers within easy walking distance of most sites.

Exploring the Area

In the heart of Willamette National Forest, towns are few and far apart in between. A rental motorhome makes painless traveling from town to town in search of the perfect Oregon brew, up-and-coming artist, and historical sites that permeate Oregon. Breitenbush, OR, a few miles to the north, is the site of one of the closest hot springs, which hints at Oregon’s sinister volcanic past. Hop into an RV rental and go in search of the perfect waterfall to photograph for posterity. Waterfalls are scattered across central Oregon, some making its appearance only after snowmelt occurs while others continue to gush year-round.

The RV was perfect for our New Year's Eve excursion to Silver Falls State Park! It was immaculate, pick up was easy, and Cory was very responsive when we had questions. We hadn't downloaded the app and so we didn't get a heads up to sign the contract, but Cory walked us through the process, which was much appreciated! Bed linens and pillows for the double bed were provided and pillows and a cozy blanket were also provided for the over-cab bed. (Bring sleeping bags or double sheets if you have kids who will be sleeping up there.) The kitchen was fully stocked with plates, bowls, cups, flatware, dish soap, etc. We brought paper towels, bath towels, and a dog blanket to lay down on the couch, plus our own personal gear and that was it. Helpful tip: the black water has two valves. One is right next to the gray water valve and one is on the other side of the cabin, also underneath the RV. There was a pair of medium work gloves in a pocket in the driver's side door and we also brought our own disposable gloves to use when dumping. Overall, we had an A+ experience!
