Roseburg, Oregon, the “Timber Capital of the Nation," is a small city in between Medford and Eugene in the western portion of the state. The town gets its nickname from the fact that it was once one of the country’s leading timber harvesting areas and home to several major timber companies. The city straddles either side of the South Umpqua River and sits conveniently on Interstate 5, one of the state’s most important corridors.
Roseburg was first established and named for Aaron Rose, a man from New York who built his own homestead in Oregon. This homestead would later become a store, a travel rest stop, and then eventually a hotel was built in town. The town was initially called Deer Creek before Aaron Rose donated land and money to build a courthouse, making Roseburg the county seat of Douglas County.
