Discover Lake Wilhelm RV rentals for memorable road trips
George Washington, the United States’ first president, passed through the area that would later become the town of Sandy Lake in a surveying project decades before the Revolutionary War reared its ugly head and observed that it was prone to flooding problems. Nearly two hundred years later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers agreed and created a dam upriver in 1971. With the construction of the dam, Wilhelm Lake was born.
Wilhelm Lake quickly became a popular recreational spot. Though it’s a shallow lake, it’s a long one, stretching nearly ten miles. There’s plenty of room to seek solitude for quiet fishing and wildlife observation. Maurice K. Goddard State Park, which was named for the man credited with preserving Pennsylvania’s natural beauty, encircles the lake entirely.
The closest large town is Meadville, PA, about 25 miles north. The perfect RV camping adventure doesn’t happen by magic. Start creating it when you book an RV in Mercer County, PA.

Getting Outdoors
The 2,800-acre lake is ringed by low hills that cup the water, sheltering it from brisk winds and foul weather. Tall oak, maple, and other hardwoods crowd the shore, contrasting the soft blue water with vibrant green leaves. The lake is a fisherman’s delight. The warm-water fishery hosts a wealth of fish: largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskellunge, bluegill, catfish, and a few other less-common species. They swim in the tea-stained water that reflects the sky, turning it a murky blue. In spite of being a shallow lake, boats are welcome on the surface. There are eight boat launches to choose from, a marina, and if need be, a handy fueling station. Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resource also runs a boat-rental stand. Anyone wanting to explore the watery world may borrow a pontoon, rowboat, kayak, canoe, or an electric-powered boat.Pennsylvania locals aren’t the types to let a little snow and cold stop them from having some fun. In addition to ice-boat racing, they also enjoy ice fishing, skating, and games on the ice. Ashore, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are enjoyed by many.Over 15 miles of trails weave through the Maurice K Goddard State Park woods, sometimes following the shores, other times veering onto the high hills. The woods are shared by white-tailed deer, fox, coyote, and many other small game creatures. High overhead, ospreys and bald eagles soar, keeping an eye out for prey while also guarding their nests, which are frequently found nearby.A portion of the Maurice K. Goddard State Park is open to small-game and deer hunting in autumn, as is the adjacent State Game Land 270. Pennsylvania’s park rangers are known for being strict about ensuring all hunters observe the regulations and have appropriate permits and licenses. Any other hikers in these woods should wear blaze-orange during these seasons, too.
Camping at Wilhelm Lake
Nearly every outdoor adventurers have the same fantasy: to wake up in the comforts of a rental camper surrounded by nature with birds functioning as alarm clocks. Though camping at Maurice K. Goddard State Park isn’t feasible, as it doesn’t have a campground, there are several other options in the area. Camp Wilhelm Campground, which is nestled in between the state park and Hadley, offers water and electric, a swimming pool, and an on-site camp store. The facility is family-friendly and has several planned activities during the summer months. It’s also open in winter, though amenities may be more spartan.Near Sandy Lake, Goddard Park Vacationland Campground may be a good candidate, too. The roomy campground has almost 600 sites to choose from, full hookups, WiFi, and several other amenities. The facility is dog-friendly, and it even has a bathing station to bathe dogs after a muddy romp in the woods.
Exploring the Area
Explore the long, twisting roads of the Pennsylvania backwoods and wide-open valleys in a rental motorhome. As the countryside rolls by, keep an eye out for tiny quaint towns in which charming bistros, boutique clothing stores, and pubs are established. Pennsylvania is well-known for its historic covered bridges, a few of which are still standing. One, called Kidds Mill Covered Bridge, can be found in Transfer, PA. The state is also known for its historic automobile and train mountain tunnels. Rather than force travelers to take long, treacherous routes over mountain passes, they simply blasted tunnels into the heart of the mountains. The entrance to the Kennerdell Tunnel in Kennerdell, PA, is marked by a small-but-impressive waterfall.Fancy being a part of a tradition that goes back over 150 years? Roll on down in an RV rental to Stoneboro, where the Great Stoneboro Fair has been held annually since 1868. The fair, which usually takes place over the Labor Weekend in September, has a mix of new and old events, including harness horse races and baking contests and auctions. In the past few decades, it has hosted major headliners and up-and-coming acts. Past entertainers have included the Gatlin Brothers, Joe Nichols, and Debbi Burdett. At the end of a long day of adventure, kick up your heels outside your rental RV, and enjoy the crackling campfire. Listen to bullfrogs croak and watch fireflies dance with family and friends, as you make memories you will remember for a lifetime.
My sister and my dog had a wonderful trip in the RV, I'm thinking about buying one and setting out on the road. This was the perfect way to try it out . John was a great host and was right there if I needed anything, he answered my questions promptly. The camper was spotless and very easy to drive. I just loved it!
