Presque Isle State Park is located in the northern section of Pennsylvania and covers over 3,112 acres. The state park rests on a peninsula in Lake Erie, providing stunning coastal views. The area has a rich history and was once where many Native American tribes lived. Numerous forts were also built on the grounds during the War of 1812.

Today, Presque Isle State Park is a popular spot for fishing and hiking. This state park has also been named an important birding location in the state as it is home to over 320 species. The climate tends to be somewhat chilly, although temperatures can be very comfortable during the spring and fall.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll find plenty of things to do outdoors while at Presque Isle State Park. Fishing is one of those things to try out. Fishers will find numerous fishing spots around the park thanks to its location next to Lake Erie. Some species you’ll discover here include perch, trout, bass, steelhead, and walleye. There are also a few other smaller fishing areas within the park to try out, such as Presque Isle Bay, which contains large amounts of bass, perch, and panfish. Boats can be taken out on Lake Erie, or fishers can grab their rod and fish along the shoreline.

Park-goers can also go hiking. There are quite a few trails winding around the grounds that give you stunning views of the surrounding landscape. One is the B-Trail, which is less than half-a-mile long and will take you through a thick pine forest. There’s also the Sidewalk Trail. This pathway stretches over one mile and will take you by the Presque Isle Lighthouse.

Birdwatching is yet another activity to do during your time at Presque Isle State Park. Due to the park being one of the top birdwatching areas in Pennsylvania, Presque Isle State Park is a birdwatcher's paradise. A few species you’ll find here include coots, bitterns, wrens, and terns. During the winter, many birds stop by the park during their migration - something that can be viewed from various observation platforms.

Camping at Presque Isle State Park

Those who wish to book an RV in Erie County can do so at one of the many RV campgrounds situated near Presque Isle State Park. One option is Lampe Campground. Featuring 42 sites that have waterfront views, this motorhome campground provides amenities such as 30, 50 amp electric, restrooms, laundry, picnic tables, fire rings, showers, and a dumping station. You must, however, notify this travel trailer campground at least two days before you plan to stay.

Located only a few minutes from the state park is Sara’s Campground. This family-friendly spot has 100 RV sites that come with amenities such as water, electricity, WiFi, and cable. There are picnic tables, hiking trails, and a laundry facility on the grounds. You’ll also find a small restaurant and a souvenir should you need to pick up an item for folks back home.

Exploring the Area

There are plenty of close attractions near Presque Isle State Park to visit. A short drive away from the park is the Bicentennial Tower. Towering over the area at 187 feet, this observation tower overlooks Lake Erie and Presque Isle State Park and was built as a way to celebrate the city’s bicentennial back in 1996. Visitors can buy tickets for a trip to the top, although keep in mind that the tower is only open on certain days of the year.

An hour away in Pittsburgh is Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The numerous gardens planted here feature a variety of different plants. Some you’ll be able to see include orchids, bonsai, ferns, wildflowers, and pomelo trees. In addition to this, there is a vast art collection that features both historical and contemporary pieces. When you’re done exploring the grounds, step inside its shop where they’ll find botanical souvenirs to buy, such as glass flowers and gardening books. There’s also a cafe where guests can grab a quick bite to eat.

In New Castle, there’s the Scottish Rite Cathedral. This structure was built in 1924 as a haven for local Masonic groups. Visitors can take a tour of its interior or attend one of its events, such as pancake breakfasts and bridal fairs.

You could also take your camper to Punxsutawney to explore the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center. This museum informs guests more about meteorology and how weather predictions are made. Visitors will find plenty of exhibits to view, such as ones that describe weather folklore and how thunderstorms are formed. There are also numerous programs held here throughout the year, including Groundhog Day festivals and ceremonies to induct meteorologists into its Hall of Fame.
