Named after the glacial moraines that covered the land, Moraine State Park is incredibly scenic with its surrounding hills and gorgeous landscape. With a history that spanned the ancient Indian Erie tribe to English settlers to the land being used for farming, then mining – it was later restored to its current beauty, and has since been welcoming visitors to enjoy its renewed outdoor offerings. Renting an RV is an easy way of getting around the area, and you’ll find a range of affordable RV rentals in Butler County. Getting Outdoors

Lake Arthur, in Moraine State Park, is a warm water fishery, and anglers can cast a fishing line and enjoy an afternoon of fishing here. Popular fish species found in the lake include largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, muskellunge, walleye, striped bass, and channel catfish. The Pennsylvania Fish Commission frequently stocks the lake. Remember to carry a valid fishing license. And for those of you who enjoy braving the cold, the lake is open to ice fishing during the winter months as well. 

RV camping at Moraine State Park is perfect for hikers. With 71 miles of trails to explore, there are a variety of trails suitable to different difficulty levels. Popular trails in the park include the Hilltop Trail at three miles and offer a moderate hike. The Sunken Garden Trail is also three miles long and passes through a large wetland area. The Glacier Ridge Trail is a difficult trail to hike and extends over 14 miles in length. 

Other trails in the park include 20 miles of equestrian trails, seven miles of biking trails, six miles of mountain biking trails, and 26 miles of snowmobile trails. 

Boating on Lake Arthur while at Moraine State Park is rather enjoyable. Canoes, kayaks, sailboats, rowboats, and pontoon boats are a common sight out on the lake. Sailing on the lake is a favored activity, and so is windsurfing. Bring your watercraft along with you, and if you haven’t, there are rentals available at the park. 

Camping at Moraine State Park  

While Moraine State Park is a day park and offers no camping options within the state park, there are numerous campgrounds nearby. The Buttercup Woodlands Campground in Renfrew offers 300 campsites. Amenities at the campground include pull-thru sites, big rig access, tent camping, full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric service, sewer, water, a dump station, WiFi, and cell phone coverage. Campers have access to restrooms, shower stalls, and laundry facilities. There’s a camp store for last-minute camping essentials, and a picnic shelter too. Kids will love running around in the playground or splashing about in the swimming pool. There’s a recreation room too. Bring your four-legged friends along to this pet-friendly campground. 

When you’re looking for a place to camp in an RV near Moraine State Park, drive to Portersville to the Bear Run Campground. This campground, too, has 300 campsites. It features pull-thru sites, tent camping, full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric service, sewer, water, WiFi, and cell phone coverage. There is a swimming pool to splash about in. Pets are welcome at this pet-friendly campground. 

Exploring the Area

The city of Pittsburgh is just over 40 miles from Moraine State Park and is the second-largest city in Pennsylvania. Filled with museums, art centers, parks, avenues, outdoor attractions, and much more, a visit to Pittsburgh is a must when you’re in the area.

Art lovers shouldn’t miss the Carnegie Museum of Art that holds a collection of over 30,000 objects covering a variety of art forms. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is a must-visit. Housing thousands of artifacts based on the natural world and human cultures, the museum is ranked among the top natural history museums in the country. With over 20 galleries to explore, visit the museum with plenty of time in hand during your RV rental vacation. 

The National Avery is located on the historic North Side. As one of the finest bird sanctuaries in the country, it is home to over 500 birds from 150 different bird species. Check out the many interactive exhibits that let you walk through and experience an interaction for free-flying birds. 

Take the kids to the Carnegie Science Center that focuses on science and technology. The museum is located on the banks of the Ohio River and offers several interesting attractions, including the Buhl Digital Dome, the Rangos Omnimax Theater, and Roboworld – the world’s largest permanent robotics exhibition.  

Pittsburgh is a food city. Food lovers travel to Pittsburgh just to indulge in the city’s iconic dishes that include the famous Pittsburgh Sandwich, pretzels, potpies, cheesesteaks, and whoopee pies!
