Our family of 4 outgrew its beloved Subaru Crosstrek as our taste got fancier and our desire to sleep on the ground faded. So we set out to build a modern equivalent to the tried and true (but sometimes notorious) VW Westfalia. We settled on a 2015 Ford Transit Connect long-wheelbase passenger van since we wanted full safety features for our kids in the 2nd row. 3rd row and 5th seat have been removed for camping features and additional storage. The Transit Connect is based on a car platform--the same one as the Ford Focus and you can feel it--it drives like a car with a big butt, which is exactly what it is--a car that can Really haul a lot--58.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats* If you've ever driven a typical truck, van, RV or other heavy duty vehicle, you'll appreciate the car-like handling that makes long hauls through the mountains to that perfect spot WAY more enjoyable for the driver. Another thing to love about this van, especially with current prices is the fuel consumption--25+ MPG, even w/the big tent up top.*a lot of that has been repurposed for the included camping gear but don't worry, there's still a lot of room for your gear too. After learning the wait for a pop-top was over 6 months, we installed the biggest, nicest rooftop tent you can buy and never looked back. The iKamper 2.0 is popular because it's super comfortable, works well and is ingenious in its design. We spent 10 restful nights in a row in it this year and felt great--try that on the ground. :-)The kitchen setup includes a 65L Dometic cooler that runs off the Yeti house battery, a Coleman Stove Grill (1 burner + legit grill), basic pots and pans, cutlery, silverware--think motel w/kitchenette.
What's included1400 Watt-Hour Goal Zero Yeti 1400 power Station, aka "generator" w/inverter
65L Dometic CFX65w electric cooler (12v, 24v, 120v)
4 gallon pressurized water jug with filter (use whatever water you can find)
Coleman Grill Stove w/2 1lb propane bottles

I'm a dad with 2 active, "outdoorsy" kids a wife and a dog. We enjoy car camping and recently expanded into van camping. I've had a life long interest in cars and motorsports and am particularly picky about the vehicles I own and drive. I *love* driving my Lotus Elise sports car but it's terrible for camping. :-) I don't want to be stuck being the driver of a large, ungainly camping vehicle on vacation. Instead, I prefer smaller, more nimble and fuel efficient vehicles like our Subaru Crosstrek. So, when I decided to select and build a camping van, I tried to consider these preferences. I've found it's is really a challenge to fit my family of 4 plus dog into a compact van that's more reliable and safer than the obvious and popular VW / Westfalia vans. I have immense respect for their design.

Q.I've never used a Roof Top Tent - how do I operate yours?
A.
Great question and I get it--I felt the same way. Luckily, the iKamper 2.0 is super well-designed and easy to operate. I'll give a tutorial when you get the van and you'll be a pro in no time.
