In the center of the massive Texas Triangle, Hearne is a small town in the open prairies east of the Brazos River where life is slow and the 19th century is still visible in its historic downtown. Austin is the closest "Texaplex" metropolis (about two hours’ drive) while the Texas A&M University is within 40 minutes' drive of town.

Hearne started in the 1840s as a stage stop for travelers going to and from Houston and Port Sullivan. The town's growth began when the Hearnes brothers, planters from the Old South, acquired land in Robertson County and offered the Houston and Texas Central Railway the right-of-way through their land. After the railroad construction was interrupted by the Civil War, the train finally came to town in 1868 and spurred its growth.

Today Hearne remains an important crossroad between the most populous urban centers of The Lone Star State. It also serves as a launching point for the natural water worlds of eastern Texas. Find the best RV rentals in Hearne today and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Discover Hearne

Discover the Lush Outdoors of Austin and Surrounding Area

At Lake Somerville only an hour away by motorhome rental from Hearne, you have over 11,000 acres of water to explore by canoe, kayak, or motorized boat. Bring your fishing rod, and you're likely to reel in crappie, largemouth and white bass, and catfish. The surrounding state park is also laced with close to 40 miles of trails and loops – including the 13-mile Trailway – suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. For a quieter time on the water, launch your canoe for a five-mile trip down the creek to spot white-tailed deer and a diverse population of birds and waterfowl.

Experience nature on a bigger scale by exploring the Lone Star Hiking Trail that courses through the 160,000+-acre Sam Houston National Forest about a 90-minute drive away by Hearne campervan rental. The trail passes along creeks, rivers, and lakes and is made up of three major sections: the 40-mile Lake Conroe trail, the 60-mile Central Area trail, and the 27-mile Winters Bayou/Tarkington Creek trail. In addition to trails, the national forest is home to a handful of wilderness and scenic areas that invite fishing, watersports, and wildlife-viewing. Time your visit from mid-February to early March for an outdoor flower show of redbud and dogwood blossoms.

Within Austin's city limits lies the lush and rugged beauty of McKinney Falls State Park, about two hours’ drive away. Marvel at the sight of Onion Creek tumbling over limestone ledges and creating refreshing pools below where visitors can swim and fish. See the rock shelter where Native Americans sought refuge during heavy rains. For a good workout, hike or bike the park's nine-mile trail, including the paved three-mile Onion Creek Hike and Bike Trail. History lovers may want to see up close the remnants of Thomas McKinney's homestead and grist mill along Onion Creek.

Where to Park Your RV

Rent a motorhome in Hearne, and you can park it right in town in Stoney’s RV Park. Offering full hookup sites, the park provides access to up to 50 amp service, city water, and laundry facilities. There’s also an ATM on site. The Encino Estates of Hearne Texas is also worth considering if you plan to stay for at least a week (no daily rates available).

Or you can venture within 15 miles of town and drive your camper rental from Hearne to Franklin where a few campgrounds offer full hook-up sites, restrooms, and showers. Before leaving town, fill your tank at any one of the dozen gas stations. Farther out but still within 20-25 miles, you’ll find several campgrounds in Bryan offering full hook-up sites, restrooms, and showers. Bryan also has a Walmart store where overnight parking may be possible. Get the store manager’s approval, and you just might have a place to stay for a night or two.

A Tour of Hearne’s Historic Past

Hearne's prosperous past can be gleaned from the Victorian houses and storefronts that encompass almost 30 blocks. Some examples are the Allen Hardware Store built in 1872 which is still owned and operated by the heirs of the original owner; the 1869 Henninger-Steffan-Marshall House owned by a former Union soldier and his wife who were in Ford's Theatre the night President Lincoln was shot; and the Adams-White Place known for its tall ceilings and antiques.

During WWII, Texas housed some 50,000 prisoners of war, and some of them (mostly Germans with a few hundred Japanese) ended up at Camp Hearne, which remained in operation until 1947. While the camp is reduced to its foundation today, you can imagine how it looked like back in the day with a full-scale model on display at the Hearne Chamber of Commerce office.

Located at the crossroads of the former east-west Missouri Pacific Railroad line and the north-south Southern Pacific Railroad line, Hearne is easily a hub for rail fans who can step back in time at the Hearne Railroad Depot for a good look at the past. Constructed in 1901, the restored depot contains relics of Hearne's and Robertson County's railroading history, including equipment used in day-to-day operations like telegraphic equipment, adding machines, and cash registers.

After a day of sightseeing, treat yourself to a range of American, Mexican, and comfort food offered in a handful of restaurants, diners, and cafés in town. There are also a few grocery stores and supermarkets in town to provide alternative food sources.

With its rich history and heritage and proximity to conveniences for a pleasant stay, Hearne makes a wonderful introduction to the rest of Robertson County. Search for an RV rental in Hearne and experience the best that this corner of The Lone Star State has to offer.
