Getting Outdoors

No Lake Fork Reservoir camping trip is complete without a day spent fishing out on the waters. Stocked annually with many different species, keen anglers can expect to catch anything from catfish and sunfish to white bass. Many visitors come to Lake Fork Reservoir for one reason only, and that is to catch one of the resident largemouth bass.

Currently, Lake Fork Reservoir holds 15 of the top 20 Texas State Record Largemouth Bass ever caught, making it a world-class lake for bass fishing. To preserve its renowned title, there are strict rules that fishers must adhere to including size restrictions and a five-bass per day catching limit. Keen anglers camping at Lake Fork Reservoir will be glad to know that the lake is well equipped with fishing apparatus including several boat ramps, fishing piers and a small store selling a variety of fishing tackle.

Although fishing is the main draw to the lake, there are sections of the lake dedicated solely to watersports. The more exhilarating watersports such as jet skiing and wakeboarding are allowed on the lake. However, the lake’s undulating water level and underwater vegetation can pose as a threat at times, so keep an eye out for any warning signs. Otherwise, the lake is a great place to spend an afternoon paddleboarding, kayaking or canoeing. The park office has created a series of paddling trails that take boaters on a journey around the best of the lake’s scenery, highlighting the perfect spots to disembark and enjoy a picnic in the hidden coves.

Keen birdwatchers renting an RV nearby will be glad to know that Lake Fork Reservoir is ideal for a spot of bird spotting! Why not set up base at the Sabine River Authority Day Use Area located on the eastern branch of the lake. This tranquil and secluded spot, complete with picnic benches and public restrooms, is home to several short walking paths. These paths wind through dogwood, pine and oak forests, tracing close to the edge of the lake where it is possible to spot hawks, eagles and the odd white pelican!

Camping at Lake Fork Reservoir

RV camping at Lake Fork Reservoir is made easy thanks to the abundance of campgrounds situated around the lake’s shoreline. The majority of these campgrounds can be found on the lake’s western branch, which is considered to be the best place for bass fishing. Consider setting up camp with your RV rental at the Lake Fork Marina Campground. Equipping all of its sites with electric, water and sewage hookups, as well as providing site-wide WiFi, campers can expect only the best here. With private boat ramp facilities as well as a small tackle house, consider staying here if you are keen to get some fishing done on the lake!

To escape the crowds, consider camping on the lake’s eastern fork, where there is just one campground tucked into the pine forest. Oak Ridge Resort offers an RV only campground with 35 fully serviced campsites. Campers here can also enjoy the rustic washroom facilities and coin-operated laundry room. Perfect for those nights that you don’t fancy cooking, the onsite restaurant can cater to all of your needs!

Exploring the Area

Some additional sightseeing attractions can be found in the small town of Sulphur Springs, just a twenty-minute drive away from Lake Fork Reservoir in your rental RV. One of the town’s most unique attractions is the South West Dairy Museum and Education Center. Through informative displays and interactive events, this museum is on a mission to preserve and celebrate the history of the Southwestern dairy industry. Take a tour of the 10,000 square foot dairy barn house, learning how to churn butter and enjoying ice cream samples on the way!

History buffs with a Sulphur Springs camper rental should set aside time to visit the Heritage Park and Museum. Encompassing 11-acres, the heritage park is home to several historical buildings including farmhouses, a chapel, and a post office. Also located within the park is The Hopkins County Museum, built inside an early 20th century home. Visitors can explore the civil war memorabilia, Caddo Indian artifacts or Paleolithic fossils. Coincide your visit with the annual Folk Festival that is held on the second weekend in May and see the grounds come alive with historical demonstrations and theatrical performances.

For a deeper delve into the region's history, why not take a visit to the Hopkins County Courthouse. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this is one of the most well-preserved examples of 19th-century architecture in the county. Standing proudly on the corner of two main roads, the courthouse’s tall turrets are impossible to miss. Take a minute to get closer to the courthouse to admire the pink and blue granite that has been used to adorn the lower walls as well as the detailed faces that have been carved into the balconies.
