Cooper Lake State Park encompasses over 3,000 acres of rolling hills and tranquil forests in Cooper, Texas. Opened to the public in 1996, Cooper Lake State Park is one of the youngest state parks in Texas. The lake began as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in 1986 and was completed in 1991. Today, the 193,000-acre lake attracts thousands of boaters, anglers, and lake loungers from near and far each year. Wildlife watchers and outdoor adventurers will find plenty of scenery to explore and activities to enjoy here.

Featuring two spacious camping units, Cooper Lake State Park is the perfect place to take the family for a getaway. Book your RV in Delta County, where the park's first camping unit, Doctor's Creek, is located. The second and biggest unit of the park is South Sulphur. Rent an RV in Hopkins County if you plan on staying in South Sulphur.

Discover Cooper Lake State Park

Getting Outdoors

The main attraction to the area is, unsurprisingly, Cooper Lake. Many RV campers at Cooper Lake State Park beat the Texas heat down at the lake's unsupervised swimming area. Boating is another popular pastime at Cooper Lake. Kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, and water skis are all allowed to explore the water. Don't have your own boat? You'll find rental services right on-site.

Anglers, don't forget to pack your rod and reel in the RV rental. Whether you fish from the shore or from your boat, you'll find ample opportunities to wet a line in Cooper Lake. Common catches include bass, catfish, and crappie. Visitors fishing and boating at Cooper Lake have access to boat docks, fishing piers, and a fish cleaning station.

Hikers looking for a short, easy walk should stick to the Doctors Creek Unit. Four trails, ranging from a half mile to just over a mile long, wind their way through this area. The Cedar Creek Trail - South Loop leads down to the lake. Wildlife watchers should keep to the north and south loops to spot some of the park's bird life, including egrets and herons. The South Sulphur Unit offers more challenging routes. The Lonesome Dove Loop is just under five miles long and features tricky terrain and elevation changes. Hikers are rewarded with views of creeks and a calm pond.

Camping at Cooper Lake State Park

Visitors camping at Cooper Lake State Park can choose between two main camping units. Doctor's Creek features 39 electric sites for RV campers, one of which is ADA-accessible. This campground also offers six group campsites, each accommodating up to 48 guests.

South Sulphur is the largest Cooper Lake State Park campground, consisting of 82 electric sites for motorhomes, including six ADA-accessible sites and 15 walk-in sites. RV sites are clean, level, and offer both water and electrical hookups. Some sites can accommodate rigs up to 95 feet long, but the standard length limit for RV campers is 55 feet.

All sites include a picnic table, fire ring, lantern post, and easy access to restrooms. The park allows pets on a leash no longer than six feet, so feel free to bring the whole family for your RV camping trip.

Rent an RV in Hunt County and take your time exploring all the area's attractions.
