Getting Outdoors

One of the most popular outdoor activities in Eisenhower State Park is, undoubtedly, hiking. Armadillo Hill Trail is great for beginners at just under a mile long, while Ike's Hike and Bike Trail runs just over three miles along the lakeshore and features both smooth and rugged terrain. Although this trail is open for everyone, only experienced mountain bikers and hikers should attempt the rugged part of the trail. The most alluring natural feature of the park is Lake Texoma, as it beckons hundreds of fishing enthusiasts every year. The lake is best known for bass fishing, but it also has plenty of catfish, crappie, and bluegill. You won't need a license to fish from Lake Texoma's shore, and you'll be able to borrow fishing equipment, such as reels and rods, right on-site. Aside from its hiking and biking trails, Eisenhower State Park also has dedicated ATV and dirt bike trails. The main trails include the Pee Wee Practice Area, which is designed for novice riders; the Big Woods Canyon Trail, which is somewhat difficult to navigate; The Backland Ramble Trail, which doesn't allow backcountry riding; and the Timber Rattler Run. The last one requires a bit of caution, as rattlesnakes are commonly found along the trail. If you don't feel like hiking or riding a bike, you can explore the park from your boat. The park's boat launch accommodates vessels up to 26 feet long. Visitors should keep in mind that children under the age of 13 must wear life jackets. Northwest of Bois D'arc Ridge, you can find the Eisenhower Yacht Club, where you can purchase gifts, fishing supplies, and snacks.
Getting Outdoors

Camping at Eisenhower State Park

The park's campground is divided into three major camping locations. The Bois D'arc Ridge offers 50 campsites with sewer, electric, and water hookups. Each site has a fire ring, grill, and lantern post. There's also a dump station and a bathhouse with restrooms and showers. This fully equipped RV campground is adjacent to the public dock and boat launch area. Next up is Armadillo Hill, which offers 45 sites with electric and water hookups. This location is the most isolated RV campground area, but it does feature a dump station, showers, restrooms, and a play area, making it a convenient base for camping with an RV. Fossil Ridge/Elm Point offer more than 40 sites with only water hookups. All sites have lantern posts and picnic tables, while some have grills and fire rings. This campground is close to the swimming and ATV areas and includes amenities such as a play area, showers, restrooms, and drinking water spigots.

Explore the Area

When camping at Eisenhower State Park, don't confine yourself to the park. You'll want to explore some of the exciting attractions surrounding the park as well. Start your adventure by checking out the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site. Here, you can get a glimpse of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's childhood home and check out a plethora of exhibits and memorabilia that showcase the former president's accomplishments. For those more interested in the wildlife of Texas, stop by the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Here, visitors can explore the area from the comfort of their own vehicles, hunt during open season, fish, or observe and photograph the local animals. Red River Railroad Museum is yet another place you shouldn't miss. This museum is located in downtown Denison and features thousands of valuable items from the golden age of the railroad industry. You'll find plenty of book collections, maps, photos, and artifacts that tell the engaging story of Texas' railroad system. Last but not least, take some time to visit the Chestnut Square Heritage Village, where you can tour historic homes, a blacksmith shop, and a garden. Staff at this living history museum dress in period clothing, and visitors can view the artifacts of Collins County residents from days past. While you're here, treat yourself to some fresh fruits and vegetables as well. If you want to get a better taste of Texas, head south of Eisenhower State Park to find a number of restaurants. Whether you're craving Chinese, Italian, Mexican, or good old-fashioned Southern cuisine, you'll find something to please your palate within a few miles of the park. There are also several gas stations along the way where you can grab some supplies and refuel your motorhome rental.

The host was pleasant and informative. The 2023 Dutchmen Astoria was clean and exactly what we needed. The Show up and Camp option with setup and delivery included made everything incredibly easy. We did exactly that, appreciated everything, and had a great time! Thank you Garrett
