One of the best things about camping at Flaming Gorge/Manila KOA is that you’ll be just minutes away from Ashley National Forest. This extensive natural area is a hotspot for adventure activities. Within the 1.3-million-acre boundaries, there are elevations of up to 13,500 feet and landscapes which range from mountain peaks to high desert and lush forest. Ashley National Forest is home to both vast wilderness areas and accessible recreational areas. You can hike and mountain bike in the shadow of Kings Peak, the highest peak in Utah, or take your rental RV for an unforgettable drive on the Flaming Gorge Uintas National Scenic Byway. Visitors can also get active with watersports, horseback riding, and ATV driving, or just enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors. There’s fun to be had in the wintertime too so remember to bring your snowshoes, skis, snowboard, or snowmobile for exploring the trails. A popular spot to visit within Ashley National Forest is Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. At its heart is the Flaming Gorge Reservoir which stretches for an impressive 91 miles between dramatic red cliffs in the southwest region of Wyoming. The area is best known for its watersports. Here you can rent a boat and traverse the lake on waterskis or paddle a canoe or kayak on one of the connected rivers. Tubing and swimming are also possible at Flaming Gorge Recreation Area. There are discoveries to be made on dry land too. Just hop on to one of the designated hiking trails - these range from short and gentle to challenging full-day hikes - or take a tour of Flaming Gorge Dam. Another natural highlight of the region is Red Fleet State Park, which is located just a few miles from Vernal. The 1,963-acre state park is famous for its unique ship-shaped sandstone formations as well as its Dinosaur Trackway Trail. You can park your camper rental at the visitor’s center and follow in the prehistoric footsteps of dinosaurs for 1.5 miles. During the summertime heat, you can return to the park's 750-acre reservoir for swimming and boating. When your legs are tired from hiking and you’ve seen enough wildlife, you can take your Manila camper rental for a spin on Sheep Creek Geological Loop. It’s one of the most spectacular scenic driving routes in the state. This 13-mile route begins five miles south of Manila and winds through the landscape of Sheep Creek Canyon National Geological Area. Along the way, you can see the rocky layers of the Uinta Fault which runs along the northern side of the mountain range. You may also spot bighorn sheep and a diverse range of birdlife along the way.
